Dear Rajesh,

I am quite surprised that Immigration has asked you for NI number. Well as this is the first time you are visiting UK and you are still in India you obviously will not have the NI nunber.

NI Numbers are genrally issued for people in the UK who have started working or Intend to start work soon. This is not a quick process, it could take a few weeks before you can get a Pernament NI number which is in the format of XX NN NN NN X ( X = Alphabets, N Number).

For your WP Visa purpose you can tell the concerned authority that you do not have a NI number at the moment as this is the first time you are visiting UK and have not started work. I think you should be all right once you mention this to them and there wount be any effects on your WP Visa processing as well. Do provide them the full details of your employer in UK if you have not already done so.

Once you have started work in UK your employer will generate a Temporary NI number ( TN DD MM YY S - where DD MM YY is your date of birth and S is gender) and start paying our tax and NI contributions. You would then need your salary slips, Employer contract and address proof to apply for the Permanent NI number atthe nearest DSS office.

Hope this helps. I have given you a bit of NI background as I think it will help you as you are visiting first time.

Good Luck

Normally you would apply for your NI number once you had a letter from an employer confirming your employment. I would guess that Immigration are asking for your NI number IF you already have one; however, as another poster answered, you could ask the British High Commission for advice. I doubt that an NI number would be issued to someone before arrival in te UK.

It is all confusing to me you cannot get a National Insurance number until you begin work. You cannot work because you dont have a Visa to do so.What i do think is that you are intending to come to the Uk get lost and then apply for a Nat Ins Number making it then legal for you to work. You are simply picking peoples brains remember we first made the Morris Oxford car now India makes it in the thousands.Forget it we are full.

Why isn't you new husband helping you with any of this? That is what he is for- a PARTNER, you know, your other half. Isn't he excited about you coming? Why isn't he helping? I understand how excited you are, but he should be just as or more so. Ask him to help you. Your husband is IN the UK. He can find out very easily.

You will have to go to the British Embassy in India, and talk to them as to what you need.
