is there a way to treat them at home?

Yes, vets use an anti-biotic ointment that costs $75.00 for half an ounce. That same ointment can be bought at a drug store or any store for that matter for $5.00 an ounce or more. Its called Neosporin. What it does is coats the eye and the antibiotic eats at the infection.

You put a minimal amount on your cat's eye, close its lid and rub it gently. The infection should clear up within 3-7 days. The Neosporin won't hurt your pet, but if it gets worse, there could be something mroe than an eye infection going on and you may need to see the vet after all.

I've used the ointment on my own cats, so I trust it and know that it's much cheaper than what the vets prescribe.

Play it safe and go to the vet. Most likely it will be a minor infection that will require a special neosporin for cats eyes. Sometimes, depending on the severity of the infection, they will prescribe a neosporin for cats eyes that also has a steroid in it. It's important to know exactly what your cat needs rather than try to treat it yourself.

I agree that you should bring the cat to the vet and let them treat it. Eyes are very sensitive and the cat could lose her/his eyesight if the infection is left untreated. Also you need to be very careful and if you have any kids, because some eye infections can transmit from feline to humans. Be sure to be washing your hands a lot and refrain any kids from playing with the cat until healed.

No, I highly recommend going to the vet! You most likely will get some veterinary (not human!) Rx eyedrops, like Tobramycin and instructions on how to treat your cat's eye with the meds at home.
