It's too difficult to generalize. There isn't any one answer to cover all cases. Some mental disorders can be caused or aggravated by stressful and unhappy situations. Some mental disorders lead to a life filled with stressful and unhappy situations. Sometimes mental disorders, stress and unhappiness can all reinforce each other leading to more of all three which in turn breeds more of the same etc.
Some mental disorders are caused by chemical imbalance. Some are more cognitive in origin. Some are a mix of both.
Like I said, there is no one single cause or type of mental disorder.

The answer is by no means conclusive, and there are some disorders that seem to result from genetic propensities, while others are more environmental.
However, there is likely a combination of factors, where certain people have gentic inclinations toward lower seratonin (as well as other neurotransmitters that may be present in varying amounts) that make them more likely to succumb to environmental pressures.
Hey, I know it's not a definitve answer, but there are still very few of those to be had when it comes to brain research and mental disorders.

It depends. A lot. Many times, people are born with certain abnormalities in their brains that can develop into mental disorders in certain situations, other times traumatic experiences can cause them.
If a pregnant woman gets the Flu, then her child has a much higher chance of developing Autism or Schizophrenia.
If one twin develops schizophrenia, the other is much more likely to as well.

Mental disorders are caused by a lack of certain chemicals in the brain, primarily seratonin and dopamine. But others can play a role as well.

Yes both. If you do anything like take drugs that increases or decreases your serotonin levels, it will give you more of a depression type disorder. And some people just simply can't make enough HAPPY chemicals in their brian.

Both. Usually a negative experience triggers a change in brain chemistry. Other times, that's just the way a person's brain works, even if nothing bad happened. Every person is different.

Some people are more prone to mental illness if they have it diagnosed in their family history and some times people can go though a very traumatic situation that they can't handle and they block things in their brain to believe it never happened. In severe situations, people can get personalities from this.E,g Repeated sexual abuse as a child. Very sad it is.
