There's a boring reason and a typical pesky kitten reason... the boring one is because you are removing their scent and they don't get it 'cos they're trying to mark their territory.
Otherwise, kittens want to know what you're up to ALL of the time and, let's face it, if someone kept rummaging around your toilet, you'd be curious too!!

Mine is the same, she seems fascinated when I pour away the old litter, re line and add the new litter but I think it's because it smells of them and they wonder why you're removing the smell..
None of my cats (I have three, two adult cats and a kitten) meow loudly when they step into the litter tray, the two that use it seem to be just intent on destroying the paper that lines in and spreading the litter as far across the kitchen as possible.

My cat is an astonishing 20 years old and gawps when I empty her litter tray and miaows loudly when she gets in it. There are three issues here...
1) My cat is doing her best to outlive me, just to prove a point. Or because she's a total ratbag.
2) She gawps to make sure I'm clearing out the royal wee properly.
3) She miaows loudly either because the litter is too rough for her dainty tootsies, or because she wants us to watch her peeing or pooing. She's also developed the knack of pointing her ancient behind outside the litter tray and crapping on the carpet squares around it, hence the saying "The cat shat on the mat".

Kittens are curious and fascinated by anything that anyone does at any point in time. My six year old cat still is amazed every time he sees the tolet flush or I turn the TV on, they're just silly animals who never get bored in life. Sounds like you just have happy healthy cats who are enjoying life... even if it comes in the form of a litter box.
Maybe people should take a life lesson from your cats and learn to enjoy life just as much as they do.

My kitten does the same thing! As soon as I take the lid off, there she is - I'm sure she's inspecting to make sure I get the job done. lol.
She cannot wait to get in the clean box - especially if I add litter from the box. She cannot even wait until I put it back. We sort of have a routine. As soon as she sees me put the scoop away, she'll stand in the box and wait for me to put the lid on. I'll snap it on and then place her and the box back in the closet. lol.

Mine stand right next to the box when I clean it. I wonder if they are thinking "I worked really hard to hide that mess and now she's digging it back out- what a nut!". As soon as I'm done and throw the mess out, they jump right into their boxes and poo or tinkle.
No, I don't know why your kittens meows when it goes in it's box. Mine like to be praised when they're in there and, if I'm around, I do praise them. Maybe he's just looking for attention or he's lonely.

Mine are adult cats, but they are very attentive and hover while I'm cleaning the box. One of them for sure, likes to be the first footprint in a brand new clean box. She is always the first in line, lol. I can't understand how she can always be ready to "go" as soon as the box is cleaned.
