Over the counter flea and tick meds do not work!!!! You just about need to see your vet for the GOOD stuff, frontline, Advantix, etc...to really knock out a flea problem.

Hartz did kill my cat, he was elderly, and we didn't know better than to apply hartz for a flea infestation we were having. At the time we had two cats and a dog and all of them were given treatment.
The next week my cat had the equivilant of a stroke (True strokes are rare in cats) and from then on he wasn't able to take care of himself, then he had two more and we had to have him put down. The vet told us that all this was most likely due to the hartz treatment we gave him. Do not use hartz on any animals, spend the extra money for frontline. It's still cheaper than an $8000 vet bill.

Hartz is horrible. It has chemicals in it that shouldn't be handled by anyone, especially kids. Frontline is safe and effective.
However...Hartz Flea and Heartworm?? There is no such thing. Heartworm medication cannont legally be sold over the counter, as the dog must have a bloodtest and prescription from a vet for heartworm prevetntion. I'm thinking you meant "Hartz flea and tick".
Also, Hartz has been linked to seizures and death in some dogs. Avoid.

Put simply: Hartz = terrible, Frontline = great.
Anything you buy in a shop is not going to be especially effective, as stores are not licensed to sell the appropriate drugs - their flea treatment are pretty much just random insecticides that are often not even appropriate for the given situation. This is why they're cheap!!!
Frontline is a specially formulated veterinary product. They've spent years developing and advancing it, plus it actually WORKS which is why they can justify charging more for it. Hartz on the other hand is known to be one of the crappier store-bought brands, which are also quite likely to cause reactions in animals.
Different drugs, different companies, different products - no comparison.

Hartz nearly killed my cat! The answering service had to track down my vet at the golf course or wherever on a Sunday afternoon (while I was frantically bathing my cat in the sink to get it off him), and we had to make a frantic, mad dash to the vet's office! Thank goodness he knew what to do and had the correct antidotes on hand. He had the syringes loaded and ready, there wasn't a second to lose. He told us a delay of even moments could have been fatal!
Fortunately, my baby made a full recovery. My vet told me to never ever use anything made by Hartz, and to only use Frontline or Advantage. I made Hartz reimburse my vet's bill. It wiped out my Christmas money, but was worth every penny, of course.
So, that should tell you all you need to know. My vet said Hartz has killed many pets, and shouldn't even be in business!

Hartz is a very low quality brand that can be bought just about anywhere. I have heard that it is not good for dogs at all.
Frontline Plus or Advantix are much better choices even though they are more expensive.

All hartz things for pets are junk and a lot of them make pets sick.Frontline really works and won;t make your cat or dog ill from using it,When you buy anything hartz you are wasting money and putting your pets life in danger honestly.I bought hartz flea collars and it made my cats all sick and they were like poisoned. The vet said do not ever use any of their products again; PLUS NONE OF THERE THINGS EVEN DO THE JOB.ADVANTAGE IS GOOD ALSO FOR FLEAS ; BUT FRONLINE IS THE BEST FOR HEARTWORMS, good luck.,

I work at an Emergency animal hosp. we see numerous cases from over the counter products each week. They are not regulated very well and can really mess up your dog. The bills are very high when this happens. Get the frontline or advatage, heartgaurd products that work and save your money in the long run.

Frontline actually works. Hartz is cheap garbage that is more toxic to your dog and far less effective.
