Most prepared refried beans are made with lard, that's pure animal fat.

In general, the canned version are very high in both fat and sodium.
They are easy to make at home, a quick way is to sautee some minced garlic and chopped onions in a little bit of olive oil along with a bit of diced green pepper. Add a dash of salt & pepper to taste, a pinch of cumin and a pinch of cayenne. drain & rinse a can of pinto beans, add to pan and heat gently. remove & allow to cool, mash to a "fairly" smooth consistency. re-heat your pan, add a splash of oil, when hot add the bean mixture, fry until you get a nice "crust" on the bottom, flip over and heat for another minute or two until heated through. Serve with a garnish of chopped fresh cilantro or a little parsley. Good source of protein and fiber.

most refried beans have lard in them, which is bad for you. there are vegetarian refried beans which are much healthier.
