If you have dependents (wife/husband/children) you are allowed to live in housing on post or off post. If you choose to live on post (there may be a waiting list) then you live there for free. If you choose to live off post you will recieve BAH (basic allowence for housing) which is based off the average cost to rent a house/appartment in the area you are stationed .
BAH is based on your location and rank, post housing is based on your rank and number of dependents.

YES, and the free housing does not come out of your paycheck, unless you are married, then the US Military pays you extra, except if you live on base in Government Housing, then you'll pay!!

All military personnel get a place to live in ADDITION to their pay. It's a hell of a deal.
The type of housing depends on where you are stationed, and your pay grade, and if you are married or not.
Lower pay grade enlisted personnel typically live on base in a dormitory or apartment style environment.
Married people either get housing, or extra money to pay for their own housing.
If your base does not have housing, they typically find a way to house their people in the community close to the base. If not, there is a supplement to your income for housing based on the cost of living for the area.
The higher up you go, the better the living conditions.

Yes, a paycheck and a place to live. You meals are taken out of your check before you see it so you never notice. It's about a dollar and change per day. When I was in in the early 90's it was a little over $30 a month for food cost.

In addition to your Basic Pay, you are paid a housing allowance UNLESS you are housed on the base. If you don't live on base and instead live in a regular civilian house or apartment, then your housing allowance is included in your monthly check.

Housing is in addition to your basic pay. If you live in the barracks or base housing then they keep the extra pay. Your housing allowance is also tax free.

If you live in housing on post and it is ran by a private company then your BAH is put in your check, taxed then taken back out as an allotment... That is what they do here.
