You have to really try hard to look through the New Testament (or a mohameddan anti-christian site) to find a few statements like that, that can be twisted to look like one of Mohammed's many violent statements.
If you look at that passage he's saying that adherence to him can cause strife. E.g. he was speaking in advance about cultures where people becoming christian would lead to their rejection. For instance, in some mohammedan countries such as Afghan or Saudi you will be in danger of murder if you believe on Jesus for salvation. In the Roman Empire christians were put to death because they refused to worship the Emperor. So family members can disown, be violent, and even threaten with murder people who have converted. In North Korea known christians can get taken from their families and sent to harsh prison camps. Jesus was right - this has happened in many places.

Figurative speech.
If you accept Jesus as your Savior and live as a Christian, some ppl will disagree with your lifestyle. Families have broken up because parents/siblings/spouses etc. have been against the lifestyle.
Jesus didn't literally mean that he came to turn families against each other. He came to offer us a choice. Those of us who choose to follow him should expect opposition, even from our own families.

It is called Hyperbol -
a figure of speech which is an exaggeration. Persons often use expressions such as "I nearly died laughing," "I was hopping mad," and "I tried a thousand times." Such statements are not literally true, but people make them to sound impressive or to emphasize something, such as a feeling, effort, or reaction.
Very common in the culture of that time.
And even true today - Christians being frowned on by their family who don't share their beliefs.

isn't it obtrusive? extensive-unfold, each and every hour, in lots of hundreds and centers, each and all the individuals of the Christian congregations are praying for peace yet by no skill got here? one extra; Matthew 24:4-8, Mark 13:4-7 and Luke 21:7-11 permit you to appreciate too approximately what Jesus pronounced to his disciples on the topic of people who hold forth approximately him.

Ah because those who are in him, have the peace of him.
But..... in order to be in him and walking in his ways and standing firm in his name, sometimes (and quite often) it is to stand firm in his name against father/mother sister/brother etc... Many times families do not like it when their children start to understand the ways of Christ .... following Christ sometimes means that you have to give up your former self and sometimes that means family members. This is especially true for the Jews for Jesus.

Jesus did not come to disrupt the world. Throw away your Bible and read Conversations with God by Neale Walsch.

Christ was predicting the consequences of a jew choosing to follow Christ. Many were at odds with their families when they choose to follow Christ and not their families faith. As it turns out, he was correct.
