Yes, it is a community and social group, useful to help one another in times of need, to celebrate together in births and marriages, and to cooperate in doing good for the community. It is something to do on Sunday morning (or whenever; once a week is common).

And remember that those "ideas" include moral judgment, which is either good or bad, depending on many factors. Sometimes it is a straight-jacket that makes people neurotic; sometimes it is a strengthening of resolve; sometimes it is understanding and forgiveness.

It wasn't supposed to be. It was supposed to be literal truth. These days, many otherwise intelligent people are a little confused as to which way they want to look at it, though.
