Nuns are female avowed religious persons in the Catholic church. They take vows of poverty, celibacy, and obedience to the Church, and they then serve the Church and wider world in a variety of ways. Some study nursing and staff hospitals and clinics for the poor or in 3rd world countries. Others study for their teaching certificates and teach in Catholic schools or mission schools. Others work in diocesan offices or serve as counselors. Some orders of nuns (a minority of them) are what we call "cloistered". They live apart from society, and their lives are centered around prayer and theological study. There is even a small order quartered in Vatican City that works to preserve and restore works of art and objects of historical significance that are the property of the Church. Nuns have many purposes - these are just a few examples.

Good question. I don't see any biblical mention of the idea of a "nun" or the need for a "nun." Even "saints" are just defined, in scripture, as believers. So, if you believe, you are a saint just like Mother Theresa. There is no difference. So, I think the concept of "nuns" evolved from Catholic tradition, and is not necessarily mandated by God.

They enter an order to pray and be contemplative, just like Buddhist monks and nuns leave the ranks of laity to focus on meditation, prayer, gain in wisdom, etc. In different orders some do public service and others remain in cloistered orders focused solely on prayer and meditation for their own reasons.

Actually, I think the original idea was that women should have a place to get away from the world, and devote their lives to God.
Whatever you might think of the Catholic religion (I'm not a big fan, myself), you have to admit that the Catholic church has done much good in the world...hospitals, schools, etc...
However, it is also true that they have done much evil.
Ahhh, well...God will judge each one by what is in his heart...not what label he put to his faith.

When I was a child, they taught me that "You are a jellyfish!" and "Tell the non Catholics that they go to hell". I hope today they do better than that. It is hard to learn to civilize and educate properly when you take such things to heart! But they are human, so.

They are women who have rejected the allure of the world in order to devote their entire lives to the service of God. In addition to such religious "sisters" there are orders of religious brothers, men who likewise reject attachment to, and many of the benefts of the world in order to focus totally on full time service to God and His people.
