They can do this because it's true; all institutions have problems of their own.
In many organizations, the higher-ups will support the ranking employees when attached by an outside force.
I think this was less an excuse and more an attempt to get out of the spotlight.
When you state that statistic, you should also state the statistics for the country: X% of men in the US are child molestors and X% of these are priests. Then there would be some basis for comparison and it would allow for a less biased fact. You also have to acknowledge that there are vast amount of inctdents of abuse that are not reported and a an amount of the incidents that are reported are false allegations and a large amount that are speculated to never have been reported.
I think that when you come up with those numbers, you will see that the percentage of "pedophile priests" is less shocking than it seems.
I'm certainly not saying it's justifiable as clergy of all kinds should be above reproach. Personally, I think any child molestor should be castrated.

This brings to mind the Tylenol situation a few years ago. Someone laced some bottles of Tylenol with poison and it caused someone to die. Tylenol could have avoided responsibility, as really, it wasn't their fault that someone tampered with a bottle of Tylenol once the bottles hit the store shelves. They could have said, "well, how do you know that other medications are safe? Tylenol isn't the only medication out there that has likely hurt someone". No, they didn't do that. They took responsibility for this catastrophic situation and they pulled their product from store shelves and recalled it. They lost millions of dollars in doing so, and invested a ton of money to get to the root of how this could have happened and in devising ways to prevent such a thing from happening again. This could have destroyed the company. Instead, because this company put public safety over their own profit, public confidence was restored and people trusted Tylenol and were not afraid to take the medicine because they knew that the company was doing probably more to ensure their safety than other drug manufacturers. As a result of Tylenol's efforts, great change took place in the packaging of consumer products to make products more temper resistant.
The lesson to be learned here is that sexual perversion does exist among all religious organizations - not one is exempt. The majority of people in these organizations would not engage in such awful behavior, but the few that do, tarnish the image of the rest who don't. The best thing to do would be to avoid passing the buck and saying "well others do it, why focus on us?" and rather own up to the problem, vow to fix it, and help restore public confidence.

Isn't it sad?
I watched a TV news show in which an investigative reporter was looking into claims of priests molesting children. The reporter said, "at first I thought it was rare, then I thought it was common, and then the more I looked into it, I realized it was the culture."
It is so widespread and so well hidden still. What a shame. When are parents going to wake up and stop delivering their kids into the hands of their molesters?

Well you see priests have to take an oath of celibacy ya see... So since people don't want to be one then they need to have an incentive, like being able to touch little boys. Which is why most priests are indeed gay and like having a penis in their anus. Therefore they need to cover up for the needs to be able to keep as many as they can.

The Catholic church losses respect if it is found to have pedophiles amongst its leaders...as such, it's not surprising to me that they would sweep such under the rug as much as they can.
This being said, 12 points sounds a bit high. I would be interested to see your source on that. I could see 12% of priests being gay, perhaps...but sounds much to high for something as serious as pedophilia.

Everything is kept hush hush and they buy the victims silence with a large amount of money. The priest gets sent away to another parish to start over and everything is put in the skeleton closet.

NO, the real question is: Why do or did parents allow their children to be with them? There would be 0% of priests who have molested children, if parents have done their job of parenting.

Very few people usually get 1.3 million for being molested. What would you do with that money? Supposedly many who are molested grow up to be molesters. What percentage of these people now will just be rich molesters themselves?

Like so many places rather than admit to a problem and give people a bad impression they hide it so people won't know about it. Unfortunately what it does then is causes it to breed and become more prevalent. People tend to do the same thing when they try to hide their "dirty little secrats" instead of dealing with and trying to stop them.
