Actually the likelihood of drinking too much water is very small. In most cases, you will NOT flush out water soluble vitamins or electrolytes because of the way the kidneys produce urine, it uses the water to flush out ammonia but retains electrolytes. The exception is when you are drinking excess water and sweating a lot, for example when you are running a marathon in hot weather. In that case, you lose electrolytes through sweat (not through urination) and drinking pure water doesn't replace those electrolytes, and will result in a condition called Hyponatremia. Otherwise, drinking 8-12 glasses of water a day is healthy and helps keep your body in good working order.

yes it can ...

Can water harm your body?
There have been plenty of discussions about the negative effects of not drinking enough water. Dehydration can cause decreased endurance during exercise, decreased mental functioning, as well as a variety of other symptoms. However, there is another adverse water-related condition, which is actually the opposite of dehydration: hyperhydration or “water intoxication.” Hyperhydration occurs when you drink excessive amounts of water.

What happens during hyperhydration?
When you “hyperhydrate,” you can get a condition called hyponatremia. With hyponatremia, water dilutes the sodium in your bloodstream. This condition can be very dangerous because sodium plays a major role in the fluid balance of cells. Symptoms of hyponatermia may be mild and can include bloating, nausea, headaches, and vomiting. More severe symptoms can include coma, brain swelling, respiratory arrest, and death.

The kidneys can only process so much water over a given time. If you drink more water than the kidneys can process, your blood dilutes. The diluted blood creates an imbalance (more salt in the surrounding cells than in the blood). To relieve that imbalance, water from the blood starts entering the salty cells. This causes the cells to swell. Some cells and organs handle the swelling better than others. Unfortunately, skull-encased brain isn't one of them. As the brain swells, pressure builds and key portions of the brain that control breathing and other vital function begin to shut down and you die.

YES!!! Every year college students die from "water drinking contests" which they do because colleges won't allow alcohol on campus. They can die from as little as a couple gallons of water!!! What happens is that your blood and electrolytes get too thinned out, and your heart stops working because there's not enough sodium and potassium in your blood!
I think the benefits of drinking mega amounts of water has never been proven, and is highly overrated!!! Plus, it's potentially dangerous.

too much water will short circut ur electrolife but u cant drink that much water without help. you need to be forcewatered and/or on an iv. aside from that you will only be heavier for a couple minutes until you get used to the extra weight. it's actually good for weight loss because your stomach is full of water and u cant eat. hope that helps.

Yes, especially if you are sweating a lot. Water is all fine and dandy for your body, but if you drink too much of it you will end up flushing electrolytes (potassium, magnesium , etc...) out of your body through urine, and sweat if heavily exercising. As these level drop you will start to become sick and if they drop far enough and fast enough, say drinking a *ton* of water while running for 3 hours, you can even die.

There is a disease [forgot name] for it if you drink too much water. Don't substitute it for eating and eat a good well balanced diet. Be sure to take a multivitamin daily. Too much water can dilute vitamins & minerals in your body
that you need for repair, growth and maintaining body tempature.
Do you know that here in Arizona it's supposed to get up to 113 degrees with possiable rain showers. Count your blessings.

it can actually kill you, I can't remember the name of the condition, but basically your body has to be in a constant balance between water and salts and too much water throws this balance off and causes healt complications. That is why many athletes working out in hot summer days drink a lot but also take "salt tablets" to keep their bodies balanced.

Yes! Drinking too much water can overload the system and cause your body to poison its own bloodstream!! Don't drink over 10 glasses a day...and only if you exercise...otherwise you should stick to 8!!
