P plates are merely to inform other road users that you've only recently passed your test - this may encourage some drivers to give you extra time, more room and be a little more patient. It might also encourage drivers to be less courteous and more agressive towards you - swings and roundabouts, but in short - you do not have to display P plates.

Green for passed. Provisional with authority to drive unsupervised. No obligation to use them and frankly I would not, it is almost an invitation to a yobo ( or someone else who should know better) to try and be clever.
A little imp has suggested that it actually stands for Pissed, but I don't think so

No.
However, if you are in Northern Ireland you have to display orange "R" plates, and are restricted to 45mph for one year.

There is no legal requirement, if you do you run the risk of other (usually young) motorists trying to scare you any way they can as they know you are newly qualified.

You don't have to- some new drivers do because it makes them feel a bit more confident. None of my children used them- its up to you.
