You have cleared the first hurdle by taking interest in the subject. Please note that it is only when one takes a keen interest in a subject, he starts thinking about it. Hinduism is not just a faith, it is the lighthouse which shows you the direction of leading a spiritual life. The first thing you need to have is have an open mind about hinduism and all other religions. Hinduism is an open religion which strongly believes that GOD is omnipotent i.e. he is there in each and every miniscule particle of this universe, so every particle is sacred. This very essence of its ideology makes us practise that every religion, every man in this world, every animal/creature in this world is a part of GOD. GOD exists in them, so all are important and sacred. It will take you a little to understand that unlike several other religions which say that only their GOD is supreme, Hinduism doesnt say so. If only one GOD is supreme and all others are of Satanic origin, then there is something in which GOD is not present, which contradicts itself that GOD is supreme and omnipotent. By killing a man who follows satanic methods, you are also destroying a creation of GOD. It is important to understand that GOD himself has created Satan and also this web of ego, selfishness, etc through which he tests us mortal beings. It is our duty to be free from anger, ego, desires and always think of GOD and do our duty and lead a pious life as an offering to him. That is the best way of salvation. So, in order to learn hinduism, it is important first of all to have an open mind, free from hatred to any religion, living beings, whether man or animal. Please note that GOD is the creator and he will grant you whatever you ask him. But GOD is actually a spark of energy, through which this universe runs. This energy can come in any form, whichever form you wish to see. So, whether it is GOD of a hindu religion or some other is immaterial. Once you get this concept cleared, then you can go ahead and try reading books and articles to enlighten you further.

Research it on the web for starters. Then I would checkout some Ram Dass books. In case you haven't heard of him, he brings eastern religions to the west, in an simple way that we can understand as westerners. He has many books on hinduism as well as buddhism and an eastern view of christianity.
Start by reading:
The Bhagavad Gita (Hindu text) and then supplement it with Ram Dass's Paths to God: Living The Bhagavad Gita (Ram Dass's "western translation" of it).
