That's living in a big city for ya-- The pace of life is a lot faster, stress levels are somewhat elevated, but if you are resilient you will improvise, adapt and overcome.
Just make sure you have a Plan A, some support, and a Plan B.
- Plan A - Research the various neighborhoods and decide where you want to live. You don't have to live in Manhattan where rent is super-expensive-- There are four other boroughs in NYC where housing is more affordable. You want to find a reasonably good neighborhood served by the subway so you can commute into Manhattan if work is there. Just make sure you don't live beyond your means.
- Support - If you have friends who are doing well in New York City, ask them to guide you through the first few months until you can survive on your own.
- Plan B - Make sure you are on good terms with your folks back in your home town, so they can help you bail in case you find NYC is not for you.
NYC is a great place to live and raise a family.
Good luck.

I love NYC. Great city with everything you could ever want but I would never live there unless I had a lot of disposable money. Plus, if your coming from anyplace else other then another large city it will be a fairly hard transition. Not impossible though. It depends on how reluctant you are to change. You have to get used to seeing the ugliness of the city homelessness, poverty, and other things mixed in with the beauty art, culture, etc but it's not called the "crossroads of the world" for nothing. Many people work in NYC but live around in other areas like New Jersey or New York state (non-metro area) to save some money but also to relax from the fast pace of the city so you don't have to live in the city. Just be prepared to spend a lot of money for living at or near NYC because real estate is prime in a crowed area. But really, the only way to know if you can do it is...well, to do it.

NYC is fantastic! Go there and spend a little bit of time checking things out, getting oriented, doing research into where you'd like to live. I'd never pass up the opportunity to live and work in NY! Working hours can be long and tedious anywhere, cultivate a good attitude toward that. Family life is just fine. Yes, there is certainly "all the normal stuff". Families, friends, clubs, churches and synagogues, day care, schools, parks, playgrounds, beauty and barber shops, shopping, grocery stores, doctors, hospitals, movies, everything you would find in any city or town. Go for it and enjoy!

I moved to NYC with some of the same feelings that you have. Yes, the work hours are typically longer than most places, and couple that with commuting time, makes for a long day!
Worth it?? To me 100%, I love to oppertunities here, museums, theater, beautiful parks, free big name concerts in tha park during the summer! Always something to do. Family life can be enhanced by all to do here.
I would suggest to come for an extended visit, look into neighborhoods, and check commuting time to where-ever it is your partner will be working..walk around alot in different parts of town to see where you feel best in..each burrough has it's own charm, and down sides..I love it here!

Keep in mind that it is very expensive to live in NYC. If you have a car, NY has the highest auto insurance rates in the nation. It cost approx. $500 to $600 per month for secured parking. Apartments in mid-town run anywhere from $1800 to $2800 per month for a decent apt and address. Of course salaries are higher, there is so much to do in NYC. Sports, Theater, Arts, etc. If you do not mind the cost, NYC is a great place to live.

Make sure you are financially stable. The cost of living can be astronomical. Besides that, its really a great place and if you have an opportunity like this with a job lined up there I would say to go for it! What ever happens, good or bad you will learn from it.

A lot of people love New York - perhaps you are one of them - you are still young enough to explore that possibility.
It would not be for me - we have MUCH prettier and MUCH less expensive places to live here in the USA for me to want to pay a zillion dollars for a postage stamp sized apartment in an overcrowded city like NYC.

Research the cost of rentals or buying a home.
Taxes.
Parking costs.
Travel time in traffic, on trains, public transportation, and costs.
Will the salary accommodate all this?
One needs about 100K-up to live there.
