1)Turkey Legs - most Medieval.
2) Whole Roast Pork - cooked in a pit or a spit would definitely get the ambiance going.
3) Have the kids brew up some Mead. Its a medieval drink made from honey and drunk from goblets. You can home brew with little or no alcohol.
4) Stomp some grapes in a bucket or barrel (kids love this) but wash the feet first. Tell them they are stomping grapes for wine - then serve them the grape juice. You can do the old switcharoo to bottled if you feel more comfortable than using the foot pressed stuff.
5) Oven cooked fish sticks as "Catch of the Moat"
6) Set up a "living" chess game where the kids dress up the part and other play the game.

How about turkey drumsticks? I know they are big at the festivals. My youngest daughter (23) is very big into these ren fest. Probably too hard to smoke them but you can always grill them.
Corn on the cob is an easy to eat food while people are milling about.
Popcorn
Maybe rent a sno cone machine or WalMart sells them for cheap

Depending on how developed your children's palates are, some of the foods at Renaissance Fairs can be tricky. They usually serve things like cabbage soup, Fava beans, bread pudding, and lots of beer. If you have good decorations and costumes to accomodate your theme, I would opt for having more kid-friendly food so you don't have to worry about other kids not liking the foods you have chosen. You could grill hot dogs and hamburgers and your meat on a stick idea.

Do fruit Kabobs in keeping in line with food on a stick.
Lots of heavy crusty breads would work well as would cheese since that would have been a staple then. Serve in bulk like a wheel of chedder with small loaves of different breads
