A person. 4 legs in the morning (early life) they crawl, 2 legs in the afternoon (early to middle age- walking), and 3 legs at night (old age- use of a cane.)

In the morning of life,(Infancy) -one is on hands & knees (4).
In the afternoon of life ,(Adulthood)- one walks erect on (2) feet.
In the evening of life,(Old Age)-one walks on both feet & uses a cane(3).
This riddle dates from Ancient Greek Mythology.
