If you have read the bible and believe everything that is written there, it is very explicit in its writings that communicating with the dead is impossible. The dead are no more, they have no awareness of things going on in the world of the living; they are unconscious as in asleep. If you think you have spoken to a dead friend or relative, you were speaking to the devil who can always transform itself into anything or anyone. This has nothing to do with keeping in touch with "your tribal self".

If you consider taking the Bible literally and trying to follow God's instruction, then yes, I guess I have been brainwashed. I do not think it insane to try and connect with the dead, but Scripture strictly forbids it, out of concern for my soul.

What do you mean "people that have been deceased"? That implies that they are now alive. So if I dream of such people, where do the spirits of the dead come into the equation?

The Bible is quite clear that you do not try to contact the dead nor go to people who say they can. This is because you cannot contact the dead - only demons.
