If the Priests and the Catholic hierarchy had a Zero tolerance on Child abuse then think of how that money would help the poor. But alas the Church believes it is OK to sexually abuse children and YOUR money goes to support their sick habit.
STOP giving money now! I bet the church would not close squat and by some "miracle" they would come up with the money anyway. YOUR MONEY SUPPORTS CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE FROM PRIEST.

Its a shame that some people will blindly defend their priests and other clergy and blindly give their hard earned money to help defend them.

I would rather see that 10% go to help people that are less fortunate.

Okay, I've had enough of these questions. NO, not all priests sexually molest their parishioners. The money taken in the collection does not support those priests who have been ejected from the church because of sexual abuse either, either. Seriously, when a priest is found guilty of sexual abuse of any kind, from present day to 40+ years ago, they are cut off from the church; they don't even get their pension/retirement monies, etc. if they were within a few years of it. They get nothing.

You're right, the money doesn't really go to the poor, at least as I see it. But I belong to a modest church with not a lot of parishioners and moderate wealth. However, the church does raise money and help the community and its people with fun raisers, etc.

You have a real close minded attitude about Catholicism if you think that all priests are child molesters. We're in a time where if a priest does touch someone in an objectionable way, I would believe anyone would run to their family and/or the police and report it. If all priests were child molesters, then we wouldn't have any more priests and no more churches. Doesn't that seem to make any sense? People these days just don't understand how very devout persons can pledge their life to a God that others don't believe in and stay celibate to keep their bodies pure for God. Now yes, some priests and holy persons cannot fight the sexual urges we all get from time to time and go and molest a parishioner; but it isn't each and every priest.

As far as the money from the collections goes, there isn't a child molester priests fund that the better part of it goes to. I'll double check just to indulge your ignorance, but I HIGHLY doubt it.

Yes, your poem is offensive to me. If you are part German, are you then partially to blame for the Holocaust? I can't really add any more to what other people have already said, but you have to realize how little power the typical Catholic has. As Lazybones says, it is not a democracy. Women are shut out of all important decision making, so who has a voice on where the money goes? The priests do. The archbishops do. The pope does. Same people make the decisions on how to handle abusers. Much of this happened before I was born too. I personally give a token amount when I do go to mass, and make it a point to rip up the fliers sent to me by the diocese for the "Archbishops Fund Raiser To Support ____". I don't feel comfortable giving to the church unless I give the money directly to the recipient. But that's not how it works. In Catholicism, you can't confess directly to God- you must confess to a Priest who will then decide on your penance and act as a go-between with you and God. So no, I do not trust the Church any more, not even my own parish. God and myself have our own relationship now. The Catholic church must be taken over by the lay people, in my opinion, to make things right again. It must become democratic. It must accept married men as priests and women as priests. If it doesn't change, it will die out. Look at my generation, I'm a product of the Catholic school system. Less than half of my friends are still Catholic, and most of us are not in good standing. I use birth control- BAM- I'm doomed. If the priest knew that, he would not be allowed to give me communion. I would be turned away at the alter for not wanting 12 kids. Ok, I went off on a rant, when I was trying to defend the typical Catholic. You are saying the typical Catholic has blood on their hands, and I am saying no, because we have no power to where the money goes. And much of the money goes to good use.

I think It's a show that the Catholic Church will step up to compensate and make penance. The "Zero" policy is a result of "After the fact". Are not the victims of this abuse "poor"? The $$$ supports those hurt by a few in my religion, but not the whole.

Did you know that if a Public High School child gets molested that they can only receive up to $50,000.00 IF they report such molestation within 180 days (1/2 a year) ... that's what you should be freaking over.

Also, when the Catholic Church calls the local police and the Priests get put in jail ... they're out in about the same time that other criminals like John Mark Karr (who was handed on a silver platter from the Thailand govt - U know he's F'd up if the Ty Govt doesn't like his poop) but the USA let's Mr. Karr free ... and the FBI say, "We don't have resources to follow Mr. Karr" on a National TV show.

Don't you wish the US govt would follow the lead of the Church and make Penance too? Or are you happy with USA Senators forming "Stop Child Molestation on the Internet"... electing themselves to head this appropriation only to solicit and "Groom" their subjects (a 14 year old boy)?

Or are you happy with the turnover in the jail system (child molester & pedifiles) ... and the govt saying, "Here's a list of the boogy men ... past this we relinquish responsabilites so you get to live in fear" ... "We can only arrest if they're caught with evidence ... so, bait your kids ... use entrapment "

Who should we put hope in ... Church or Govt?
I put mine in the Church since it is reconcilliating for it's sins with a contrite heart and wallet to back it up.

You can't cure a headache by cutting off the head! Not all Priests and Catholics are bad, just as in any Faith or walk of life, a few rotten apples spoil the whole barrel. I am not Catholic by the way, I attend a non denominational church. Some of us need some work on our Faith too. Thanks for the question and have a great day!

I can only imagine how all the Catholics who tithed 10% every week, for decades, must feel about this. In our community, the Catholic churches are closing left & right. Their congregations have left them in droves.

Meanwhile, other Christian churches are, thankfully, seeing a resurgance in attendance. Christians will not tolerate such vile behavior and it's taken its toll on the Catholic religion but not on Christianity as a whole.

That is a fallacious argument.

P1: All money given to the church goes towards paying victims of child molestation.
P2: If you pay victims of child molestation, it encourages the priests to continue molesting the children.
C1: You're an idiot.

What have you been smoking?

My money and my church are my business -- not that of a bunch of anti-Catholic bigots with just about enough brains to be able to boot up their computers and log onto this website in the morning.

Clean up your own act, and get rid of the Protestant ministers who abuse children and women in their congregations (statistically, more abuse occurs in the Protestant churches than in the Catholic faith.) THEN maybe you can talk about Catholicism, but not until.

Money flows into the Catholic church like a river because they tell their minions to give it to them. And they will never help the poor... they are too busy taking from the poor what little they have.
