I'm in my mid-20s and I'm looking to purchase a condo in NYC. I'm interested in Astoria but I'm unfamiliar with the area. I know it as a family-friendly, blue collar, boring place full of senior citizens. Is this true? Or is it actually fun? Also, how is the commute to downtown? Finally, if I tell a lady in a bar that I live in Astoria, will she think I'm lame? If so, what other areas can you recommend where 1BR condos are <$450k. Thanks.

Not at all. Astoria's cool. It has great greek food and is about as close as you can get to midtown manhattan, and still be cool.
