I have a 2000 New Beetle. When I turn the wheel in any direction, it's began to make a "growling" sound. Not scraping, but also not that typical "power steering" sound you normally hear. Any guesses on what's wrong? It seems to get worse the longer I drive it in a day.

Check the fluid in the power steering box.

If that is good, have the steering linkages looked at, there may be something binding up

Check Your power steering pump. VW is very funny car so watch it be something like your backseat is loose. But It def sounds as if it was powersteering. I dont think its suspension if it makes that noise everytime. And breaks i highly doubt as well.

You may have to watch the Nature Channel's special - "When Beetles Go Bad".
