That depends on what you intend to use the computer for. But on the whole Linux is the best, but has a fairly steep learning curve. If your going for Linux, start with these distro's(distributions); Ubuntu, Fedora Core, Freespire, Debian, and Mandriva. These distro's are the best for beginners. Ubuntu is FREE for download (650mb) or they will send you a cd or dvd free. The other I noted can be downloaded as an ISO and burned to cd's or dvd. I would use the dvd ISO. Because most of the other distro's are + 3gigabit downloads.

Windows XP, is good but could be better. Vista, I don't recomend till after the first Service Pack is out (late Dec.).

From a personal point of View I find the easiest and most user friendly Os is Mac Os. weather it be OS 8.4 or OS X in my experience they tend to be the most Stable.

In fairness however I am only comparing this to Windows, for Example ME, XP, Vista or earlier. I have no experience of LINEX or UNIX.

My Experience comes from working with both PC'S as a Graphic Artist and NETWORK Manager, for a small company for the past 10 years. I have always found MAC Os to be more stable than windows, it doesn't get viruses as often as windows (If At All, I certainly haven't had any) and when you install a programme on a mac, you get a nice little folder with it in in your applications folder, whereas windows tends to spread parts of the programme all over the place making it virtually impossible to install anything in its entirety!

I'd swear by MAC OS!

i think at present the most versatile operating system is XP, it caters for the novice and is ideal for the more experienced user. I think in maybe a years time when Vista has settled down and all of the 'gliches' are ironed out then it really will replace XP, my advice at the moment is to stick with XP. incidentally, i have 3 computers set up in my study, 2 have XP home and the has Vista premium, the Vista computer is rarely used, there are 5 of us here who regularly compute and we all prefer to use XP. take care and good luck.

Unix/Linux by far. Much more stable a platform than Windows.
