I'm all set up to be a machine gunner in the Marine Corps. Reserve and I don't ship out for boot until the end of May 2008 (dang college). By the time I'm done with my training, Bush's term will be just about over and the dang administration is probably gonna become real anti-war, real quick. Being reserve and all, what do you think the chances of me getting some playtime in the sandbox are?

Kid, I'll tell you right now, if that's your mentality, you don't belong in combat operations.

Soldiers (I'm using the term in its generic meaning for military personnel) love to train. I know I do. However, we have a whole skillset we don't really want to use for-real. I for one am trained in Tactical Combat Casualty Care. Above and beyond my job I'm the next best thing to a medic. However, I don't want to have to patch up my mates if they get shot up.

I am also trained for tactical gunfighting. I can kill a man at up to 300 meters without difficulty, and my double taps at 50 meters are about an inch wide. I'm qualified on 3 different machineguns, the C7A2 assault rifle, the C8 carbine and the Sig Sauer and Browning pistols. I'm checked out on grenades and anti-armour weapons.

So really, I can make anyone's life real miserable any time I want.

But do I want to use that whole skillset? Not if I don't have to. trigger-happy soldiers get their mates killed real quick. Or their allies, or they get court-martialled as murderers. Or they buy the farm, as Heinlein put it.

Soldiers hope for boredom in theater of operations and don't want any excitement. It's that simple. Because when you're bored, there's no one actively trying to kill you. Excitement only means that people die.

Once you graduate Boot Camp, you will probably still get sent over and its possible you will still get your trigger time.
The thing is, it won't matter if the next Pres is for or against the war, the war will still wage on. No Pres wants to be known as the guy that bailed on a country and left it go to ruin. The next Pres might reduce troops, but they won't ever take all of us out of there. First of all, its a perfect place for us to have bases. If any other country in that region wants to start something, we are there. Perfect example, Iran. They don't want to stop research for nukes, and with a lot of our military gear over there, it would make a good staging ground for an attack on that country. So, no Pres will totally pull us out.

I could tell by your question that you're a Marine! Haha

My unit is supposed to be getting deployed in February of '08.

You've still got a chance to get over there. Pulling out of a war takes time. Even if we do put a Dem. in the White House (god help us all), that crackpot won't be able to get us outta there for a while (no matter what they want to tell people).

I have to warn you, though. When you come back after actually killing a man, you won't think it rocks so much. None of my buddies will even talk about it.

Democrat or Republican, for war or against it - either way, if you're Reserve or Active Duty, you spend time in the desert. Whether it be for 4-6 months or even a year, we all have to deploy to the sand box sometime in our careers.

Don't wory, there is never a waiting list to get into the cemetary!

You'll have plenty of chances to turn yourself into a grease stain. Try drag racing or join a gang or something.

Machine gunning people is your idea of "playtime" -- why don't you just quit school and become a mercenary?

why don't you drop out, push up the timetable for bootcamp if you're so eager to get trigger time?
