Plus or minus what, exactly?

DVD plus is mainly backed by Philips, HP and Dell. DVD minus is mainly backed by Pioneer, Toshiba and Apple.

DVD plus and DVD minus are for a large share compatible with each other, and a real winner is not necessary.

The tide seems to be turning to the DVD+ format, however. Usually, you consider the + and - when purchasing a DVD RECORDER, and not a player. The first players were of the DVD- variety. Some home-recorded DVD+ disks will not play in the older DVD- players. The DVD- disks will usually play in the DVD+ players.

If you're buying a player only, I wouldn't worry about the differences because most players manufactured today play both formats.

Neither DVD+R/RW nor DVD-R/RW meet the standards for DVD playback, but modern DVD players are able to play either format.
