Don't buy a car over 100k miles. It's just not worth it no matter how reliable the brand is. Personally, I'd never buy a car over 75k miles. Also, I would definately try to stay under 10 years old. Closer to 5 the better.

If properly maintained, a car can last as long as the owner replaces worn parts. With that said, depending on the owner and the maintaince that has been done, NO, it is not too many miles. I have heard of and seen cars with that much or more mileage that just won't die.
Yet, if you are not mechanicaly inclined, then I would suggest a vehicle with less mileage. It sounds as if this might be your first car. If so, I would recommend something in the 60,000 to 90,000 mile range. Honda, Toyota, Mazda, Subaru, Jeep, Volvo, and Mercedes all have some reputation for long milelage.

well i will tell you a story about a 1991 honda accord. My father once sold one to a man back in 1991 as a new car at one of his dealerships. My father and this man are still friends today and guess what. THe guy still has his 1991 honda accord and he has two odometers on the mantle above his fire place. Both odometers read 200,000 miles plus. The accord still has stock engine and transmission. The man has put over 1/2 a million miles on the car and still drives it to this day. I was visiting the man about 2 years ago with my dad and saw that very car and it was in pretty good shape. i am not lieing about this i swear to it that this story is true. Honda are notorious for never dieing

Doesn't matter how many miles are on the car, the car is too old. Some parts of the car will wear out whether the car is driven alot or a little, the parts will just wear out from age. At 16 years old you would be looking at a car that was ready to have just about every possible part wear out from age alone. walk away from it.
As for the 97 in rough condition... walk away. the phrase "rough condition" should be a give away. Even if they claim its only cosmetic problems ask yourself would someone that takes care of their car properly allow the cosmetic side to become rough? No, if its rough on the outside its been treated poorly and will show up in the repair bills.

The good news it's a Honda, and they're engine building expertise is world renown. The bad news is that's allot of miles, although not unusual for a sixteen year old car (about 10K a year).
Older cars, unless they have been maintained by a fanatic, are usually allot of trouble. The only exception to that rule that I would recommend is a used Mercedes Diesel. The MD might not be your cup of tea, but those engines can easily go 250--300k miles before even seeing a major rebuild.
I'd try to find a car with 40--60K, later year, well maintained.

For a Honda Accord, that milage is not too bad. They have a reputation for being really reliable cars that run for a long time with high milage. They hold their value well.
If you know an auto mechanic, get the car checked out. Other factors other than milage should figure into your decision. Factors such as who owned it, how was it used, why are they selling it, what shape the body is in, any rust,or if you are getting any warranty, etc should be considered.
Good luck....
