I am a Navy DEPPER, and will be shipping early next year. Signed my initial contract, and during my annual physical with my personal physician, he feels that I suffer from depression and is impressing that I should begin a prescription program. Will this disqualify me and how do I tell my recruiter if knowing it will?

Just tell your recruiter, arent they there for you? I believe you can work out your depression. Just to let you know the Navy is going to be tight (cool).

I don't know if it will DQ you, but I would tell your recruiter and let him/her decide. The thing is, its treatable.

I know an Army guy who was bipolar. His GF dumped him and he went off. He ended up getting $40,000 on a med discharge.

I have been diagnosed with depression, but its back in remission. Granted, I was diagnosed with it while I was in, but I haven't been booted out, and I got a TS clearance.

I am sure you could still serve, and they might not give you a high clearance, and you might have to be cleared before you go to boot camp, but it is treatable.

As far as the question, why are you depressed? Obviously that person that asked doesn't know anything about it, depression just happens. Its a chemical imbalance, and meds to help get back on track. There were days, for no reason, I just felt low. I remember times, where I would be happy in the morning, then after lunch, my depression would just hit me and I wouldn't feel like doing anything. Then, after about a day or two, I would made the decision to stop, but it would come and go, for no reason. I don't take meds anymore, and I feel fine now. Its doesn't mean that in a few years I will have those depressed feelings again, but for now, I am living pretty good.

If you want to enlist in the Navy make the choice!

Depression and the treatment for depression is considered a serious mental disorder and it will keep you out of the Navy.

What do you have to be depressed about? Control your own life. If friends, family or life situations get at you get rid of the causes. You are already making a great choice for you future with the Navy keep up the good work and screw the thoughts of depression and the drugs that go with it. You are stronger than that.

yes, starting meds WILL disqualify you.

HOWEVER. if you are truly in need of them, and you fail to disclose this need the Navy can and will discharge you for fraudulent enlistment.

the first time you have problem sin Boot camp or the Fleet, they will start lookingat your medical history, and if they find out that your Doc diagnosed you as depressed and recommended drugs, they will classify it as a pre existing condition that you failed to disclose.. thus yearning you an RE4 discharge, lose out on ALL your benefits..GI Bill, VA loan and the like, and be permanently DQd from ever joining any branch again.

If you have depression and you want to enlist, then you NEED to tell them...

I had a soldier who was bi-polar while I was in Korea. He never told anyone about it, even though he knew he had it. Apparently it is hereditary.. Anyhoo, one day he decided he wanted to take a whole bottle of sleeping pills... He was rushed to the hospital and they revived him. But after all the dust settled, he was kicked out for fraudulent enlistment. he lost all of his benefits (GI Bill, VA benefits)..

So if you think you suffer from depression and you still want to do the Navy proud, then tell them about it so it will be on record. Let the military doctors help you.

Don't listen to your Doctor! Don't take the prescription!
How bad do you want to join the Navy?

Do not (A) take the medication (B) admit that you're depressed.

Either of these can screw you out of your enlistment.
