Muslims pray facing Mecca as part of the seven pillars to their faith.
The ancient Egyptians when praying would face the sun as would the early Babylonians.

Muslims are supposed to pray facing Mecca. I don't doubt that there are religions which demand that you face the Sun when you pray, but islam isn't one of them.

Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim - In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Hello. We Muslims pray facing Makkah, in Saudi Arabia. There it was that Allah instructed Ibrahim and his son Ismaeel, upon whom be peace, to construct a building, the Ka'abah, that would serve as a focal point of worship for the believers. Initially it was there only for Allah's worship, but then the pagan Arabs introduced false gods into it and by the time Islam was revealed there were over three hundred idols in the Ka'aba. Allah's final Messenger Muhammad, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, cleansed the Ka'aba and had the idols destroyed, and returned the edifice to its original purpose as a focal point of worship of One God.
We do not worship the Ka'aba itself or the Black Stone that is embedded in it, Allah forbid. It in itself is only a focal point for the Muslims around the world. Five times a day every Muslim turns his or her face towards the same point and offers prayer to God. It is truly a beautiful and awesome idea.
Muslims are specifically FORIBIDDEN to pray at times when the sun is just rising until it has cleared the horizon, at high noon, and at sunset until the sun has completely disappeared. Because pagans used to worship the sun, we refrain from praying at these times to avoid any appearance of honoring the sun, which is just another creation of Allah. We worship the Creator, not the Creation.
I ask that Allah guides you to that which is best in this world and the next. Ameen.
Fi Aman Allah,
