I am a 25 year-old girl who is not pretty. i am also very socially awkward. ive worked hard at trying to overcome the shyness and self-consciousness i still feel at my age. i work in a corporate office as an hr assistant and feel snubbed alot. there are a couple of people im definitely friendly with (meaning i smile and wave and chat with if see them, though there are few of them) but do not have many people to talk with, generally speaking. i know it's because im low on the corporate rungs and not attractive, but how do i not let it make me feel badly? i am prone to depression and anxiety and sometimes at work i get so upset and hurt over being ostracized, that it effects my work. i cant concentrate and i feel like crying.

There's a girl who works for my company here that is quite large. However, I absolutely LOVE spending time talking with her. Her attitude makes her such a joy to be around that I don't usually pay attention to her size. So remember, pretty doesn't matter, just make sure you're open and friendly. As for being so upset, there's not alot we can do other than to tell you that nobody at work is worth getting upset over. While true, I don't think that really helps. Perhaps try talking with a doctor, you might be clinically depressed. In which case, there's help available, and it will certainly help you overall. In the meantime, ignore people that upset you.

I'm sure you've heard this at least a million times, but beauty comes from the inside; it really does. Don't let people treat you like dirt because you're not; demand respect.

Some people are just plain mean; that's just the way they are. I don't know if it has anything to do with how they were raised or if they went through a lot of troubles in life. Maybe they're jealous of you because of you are HR assistant?

Don't let mean people bring you down, because in reality, they're the low ones.

HR is a very special department in a corporation and its staff has to be "people oriented". Staff looks not for pretty faces but for honesty and sincerity from the HR staff, although sometimes it is a bit difficult as we are in between staff and management. Do carry out your duties sincerely and once you've gained their trust, you're their friend.

I remain nice to them and try to keep a positive attitude. I remind myself that we are both here for a job and it doesn't matter how well we get along outside of work. I keep my contact with them to the minimum, but enough to get the job done.
