I usually keep my cake out of the fridge (most of the time on a cakestand, covered) for a day or two. After that, I really don't know if you want to keep it in the fridge as it will harden and probably go bad.
There are many ways to make a box cake taste homemade, try adding some of your own ingredients into the cake, such as raisins, chocolate chip morsels, etc.
If you want to change the taste of the cake (or brownie) that you make out of a box, I usually add things that make the entire cake taste a bit different. For example, for a chocolate cake (Duncan Hines) I add espresso powder to the mix to make the cake taste a little bit like espresso coffee. Sometimes I add khalua too!

Generally, for storage, baked goods should be tightly wrapped with plastic wrap, and/or aluminum foil, and even placed in an airtight bag or under an inverted bowl. If any part of it is exposed, it will become stale very quickly from the loss of moisture. Some baked goods, such as breads, pies and certain frosted cakes can be stored in a cool place in the kitchen. Some breads are wrapped while others aren't. Pies and cakes do well stored under a large inverted bowl or in a pie cupboard or cake keeper

I only refrigerate the L/O cake if it has whipped cream or chream cheese icing... otherwise, it sits out.
I use a cake storer thing designed for cakes. If the cake is on a pedestal, I just put the lid over the pedestal.
If you dont' have that, use toothpicks in the cake, then gently drape long pieces of plastic wrap over the cake (& toothpicks, to keep the wrap off the icing) then securely seal under the pedestal.

hey there! You can wrap your cake in plastic wrap and put it inside a plastic bag (kinda like zipploc) and then put it in the fridge. On Thursday take the cake out of the fridge and take the plastic off. Frost the cake (it doesnt matter if its cold, in fact is better to frost a cold cake so that the crumbs dont end up in the frosting) and take it to the party. oh, and as for the frosting you can make it way in advance and keep it in the fridge and on thursday take it out for about 20 minutes before frosting, so that it is not rock hard and spreads out easierly. Hope this helps!! And have fun at the party!

Refrigerating it in an airtight container (or as close as possible) will keep it fresh longest.
Additional: It is air and temperature which causes food to spoil. Covering it and placing it in the fridge wards against both of these. Only placing it in the fridge still exposes it to the air, and circulating air at that, which will cause it to lose moisture into the air. Leaving it on the counter covered guards it from the air but allows spoilage to occur do to temperature.

I have kept cake on the counter for a few days and it doesnt get stale. You can put it in the fridge, however, I think it stays more moist out on the counter.

Ok I've made or eaten thousands of cakes in my lifetime! In fact i have one sitting here right now we ate sunday. First thing, it depends on how fast you might eat it. But normally a basic cake leave on the counter covered and sealed in a cake pan!

Either way, whether refrigerated or not, you should only have cakes for 4-5 days. Also depends on your icing. Best way is to keep it covered in the frig
