It is taken away by the Lord Almighty during Sleep.
depending on your spiritual status and mind it results in dreams and what you see in it.
All the Holy Prophets peace be on them saw the dreams which came true. Like Prophet Joseph (Yousuf peace be on him) in his boyhood itself saw the Sun Moon and Stars bowing before him. When he explained it to his father Jacob (yacoub peace be on him) he ordered Joseph not to reveal the dream to his step brothers. Accordingly he became the King of Egypt and all bowed before him. This is narrated beautifully in Holy Quran chapter # 12
In fraction of a second it is back to your body, when you awaken. If it does not then it occurs in death and the said soul returns back to the Lord Almighty.

Soul will not go anywhere, it's still inside our body when we sleep, unless the 4 elements in our body beings to decay: earth, water fire and wind, then we are consider dead....then our soul will wondering in the atmosphere.
4 elements are:
Earth - flesh, skin
Water- semen, blood
Fire - body temperature
Wind - breath

your soul does not go any where when you are sleep. this is because you are still breathing. but when you die your soul dies just as you do. hope this answers your question.

It goes to the movies. Very often I'll be watching a movie in my sleep and I wake up and can't see the ending.
