I've always wondered about this....why do they fill the top of a vitamin bottle with cotton? Seriously.

Doesn't serve any medicinal purpose, just keeps the pills from banging together and getting damaged. It lets the vitamin company use a larger bottle and give the impression that your getting more pills, but it's just empty space. Cotton is cheaper than vitamins.

Like others said, it keeps the pills from crashing into each other and breaking, but it also absorbs any moisture that might get into the bottle and potentially damage the pills (kind of like those "do not eat" packets in things like the pockets of new coats).

It's to take up the room at the top of the container so tha the pills don't rattle around too much and get broken.
