Rudolf Diesel had it figured out. Diesel fuel is primarily kerosene, and has about a third more energy that gasoline. It takes less of it to move a given vehicle. That and it is usually a little cheaper than gas. That said, diesels cost a little more to maintain than gassers so take that into some consideration too.

While your van is a petrol VW, diesel gets better gas mileage because of the simple fact that diesel burns slower.Diesel engine last longer because their internals are built to handle the higher compression.

It depends on what you mean by economical. The diesel will get better mileage and last a lot longer, but that may be offset a long ways by initial cost and upkeep. Assuming no trouble with either, it would take a long time for the diesel to pay for the difference in fuel savings.

I havn't run accross a diesel automatic yet. I got 74mpg on my 82 diesel rabbit. No gas jobby has done that yet. Manual is more economical than automatic(as automatics have slip)

Your auto runs on gas, not diesel. Diesel engiens are slow to accelarate, but made to last longer due to th flue they require
