Hi, I have SLE. Lupus is an autoimmune disease, that can attack any organ even the skin. the word systemic in the SLE means entire in this case body. In each person with it, it can be a different organ. No two people with it does it manifest in the same way. In some it may attack major organs such as the Kidneys, Lungs, heart, and less likey the liver. In many they have photosensitiviy, meaning they can not handle the sun or ultraviolet light. that some indoor lighting has. This can cause some to have skin that gets what is called disoid rashes, or what is called a butterfly rash across the bridge of their nose and across theri cheeks. Many have other issues like stomach problems, Migranes, central nervous sytem prolems, arthritis, and much more. With Lupus as well as other autoimmune diseases, our own cells become hyperactive beliveing they are under attack, and start attacking each other. Doctors use drugs that supress our immune system to make our bodies from over reacting to itself. It is nothing we did to ourselves, some of us have it in our genes, some where somehow exposed enviromentally, and since 90% of sufferers are female, they think hormones may play a role in many autoimmune disease. Lupus is not curable, but can go into remmison with proper care, and than flare up, making you ill again.
hope that helped
