I'm being deployed, (again!) overseas. This time its a little different than last. Last time I had to keep the home up and running (paying the rent, utilities, food etc) for my college aged sons. Now that they are out on their own and I live alone, does the military pay to put my household items in storage while I'm deployed?

Short answer, Yes they will. For an entire household they will pack it up and store it all. You will probably lose BAH.

Your best bet is to ask the Movement Officer, or the Supply Sergeant, as they usually handle this.

An important note, get renters insurance if you dont have it already, and when you deploy make sure to keep it active. This is true for auto insurance. DO NOT goto liability only while your deployed if the military is storing it for you. VERY important! The government is liable only for the extent that your insurance would cover normally. I have yet to hear of an insurance agency that did not offer 'storage' coverage rates. These rates are usually really close to liability only rates, but cover any damage. (like total coverage)

Hmmm, a darned good question. When I made my final PCS move, my household goods had to go into storage while I waited on my house to be completed, and I had to pay for the shipping and storage of the portion that was over my weight allowance.

I would think that it would be logical for the military to pick up the tab, but then, since when has the military been logical . . .?

If you are receiving BAH that will continue even without the house, hint don't tell them you moved out. Also if you are PCS'ing overseas they will pay, but for a regular deployment....not sure for straight storage only. Other than that double check with finance/admin to ask for sure. These regs have changed some with forces having a higher than normal deployment schedule.

You can put your things in storage and pay for that out of your pocket, while continuing to get your BAH. They don't even need to know that you doing it.

My husband is on his 2nd deployment right now. Both times we have packed our things up and put them in storage and then I go back "home" to stay with family. I send a monthly check to the storage unit, but I'm sure they would be able to set up an allotment for you.

My prayers will be with you on your upcoming deployment.

Yes John, if you decide to put your things in storage, they will pay for that RATHER than BAH.

So consider your finances and that equation before making your choice.

your answer is BAH

at MOB you are going to haev to go talk to the finacinal department. take a copy of your rental space agreement with you. they will base your BAH off of that. but i would recomenned not to do that. change your HOR (home of record) to one of your childrens homes. the BAH money is larger if you get it for renting a house then storage. you will need to write up a basic rental agreement (search for on Google) then have it signed by you and your son and noterized. give it to your finacial section and they will do the rest.
