Hi simaticoo, ever thought about taking in an 'au pair'. Leaving the dog that long is not a good idea. He could get to a stage where he becomes mentally affected with boredom and loneliness and this might cause irreversible consequences.

That's really rough!
Do you have any friends who can stop by and play with your dog? If he is peeing on the floor it may be because he needs attention (if he is small maybe he can't hold it, most large dogs can hold it that long though if they have too, but it's probably not good for them). You can't come home during lunch to let him out or ever take him with you? There are pet day-cares, which are costly but if you are dead-set on keeping him may be the best bet. Also, you could consider getting a roommate, who may be home more often or at different times to help (plus there are a lot of advantages to having a roommate other than just help with the dog).
You may really want to consider finding him a better home. Possibly someone you know (even if just slightly) so you can keep up with how he is doing. Please don't take him to a shelter. Try to find someone yourself, and make sure you can trust them to take good care of him!

I am sorry about your mom. It is difficult enough having a sick parent without having to get rid of your dog too. Don't do that. Get a crate for when you are away and no one is home. The dog will feel secure with a bed/blanket, water dish and toy(s).
The dog also will not pee in its own den, so when you get home, take it out right away, and play with it. Get the crate now before you get the job, and put him in it for little times when you go out to get him used to it. Start by putting a cookie in the house with the dog and closing the door. This way he/she knows you are not punishing him/her. We tell our big dog "HOUSE" and she goes right into it. She knows in the morning when I go to work she gets up with me and goes outside then comes in and goes to her house and goes to sleep until someone comes and lets her out again. We have several dogs and when no one is home they sleep most of the time. She is just too big and could hurt the little ones so she is crated when we are gone for long times, 8-9 hours. She doesn't see it as punishment, just as going to her house.
How old is this dog? A dog should be able to hold its urine for 12 hours if it is a year old. I would not recommend leaving it alone that long, but there is no reason for your dog to pee in the house if it is healthy, except it is telling you it was unhappy being left alone. That is a good reason for a crate. You are the alpha dog, and you need to let your doggie know this is not acceptable. Crate training is a good safe and secure way to protect your house and your animals. Make sure you get a crate of the appropriate size for your dog. We have a super giant one in the dining room for the Rotteweiller. She is still a puppy (1 1/2 years old) and can't be left out with the little dogs because they play too hard. It works great. Good luck!

I know how you feel, I would never get rid of my dog either. Look into dog walkers and doggie daycare. Also, ask a neighborhood kid to walk the dog after school everyday or ask a neighbor to let the dog outside a couple of times throughout the day. Eventually, your dog will get used to it. Plus, make sure you give your dog your undivided attention when you are home everyday, like playing his favorite game, walking, or just pet him. Remember, there are tons of dogs who are left alone 8-9 hours a day while the owners are at work.

When my neighbor works that long she ask me to let her dog out at least twice aday and she pays me to do it that may be an idea for you or maybe try to find a doggy daycare around where you live i know here in Ohio we have those but I'm not sure how much they cost, but I know what you mean they are part of the family. So if you can trust your neighbors that seems like your best option unless they are not an animal lover then i wouldn't. I hope this helps at least a little.

is it possible to maybe up in a doggie door or something like that so that he can go outside cuz there is no way he can hold it for 8-9 hours a day every day...besides paying a dog walker or taking him some where maybe see if there is a kid that lives around you that you can give a key to and give him 10 bucks a week or something like that to come over and take him for a walk after school or since its summer they could do it twice a day...idk what kinda ppl live around you but that will help out the kid and save you money...hope everything works out w/ your family to understand its hell going threw a sick family member and trying to live a normal life too

Have a friend come in and let him out, walk him etc. If you can't find anyone but up a want ad poster or put an ad in the local paper. You also might want to try looking in the phone book for walkers and or pet shops, vets that might know someone in the area that you can hire to walk and let the dog out. Good Luck. If you lived near me, I'd do it.

When I was finishing up school and working full time, I had very little time at home. Since it only for a semester and I love my dog, getting rid of her was not an option. I took her to doggy day care every other day. The days she wasnt there she pretty much slept all day since doggy day care wore her out and I did not have to pay for everyday which saved me money. I am sure you have one in your area. I live in a small town. Check them out, they are great.

My two dogs are crate trained, but I also come home on lunch to let them out. They eat twice a day, and I don't think they should have to wait for their second meal when I get home from work to go the bathroom.
If you can't take them out in the middle of the day you should definitely hire someone you trust to stop by.

you're getting a lot of good ideas, you can also get those puppy pads for him, they make adult size ones for indoor dogs. you can give him a spot in the house where he can go by putting the pad there. but it is a good idea to have him walked once a day, is there any chance you could take him for a walk before work? even if it means getting up earlier, it will be good for both of you and it would be great if you walked him after you got home too. always leave lots of entretaining toys for him as well as stuffed kongs. but if you could get someone to come be with him for a little bit, that would be a good idea too.
