Oh dear,
Yes you are right. You do need God. Just like we all do. Honey, it is not the Lord's intention for you to feel lonely and lost. Jesus says He is our Shepherd. "The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want, He leads me beside the still waters" You said you don't know where to start, CALL upon the Lord. Read His Word. The more you read His Word and the more you find out WHO God is. The closer you will get to Him. It is not that we need the Lord to get closer to us. The Lord is always with us. It is US that needs to pursue that relationship with Him. He will not force Himself on us. The most important thing is prayer. Dear one, pray to God. Praise Him for who He is. Release your feelings of helplessness to Him. And Honey, we ALL fall. It is easy to feel guilty over every single thing, but God's Word says " There is no condemnation for those that are in Christ Jesus" God knows that we are not perfect. He knows that we are going to fall. When we fall, we must recongnize what we have done and pick ourselves up, call out to God, confess and repent of our sin. And then, STOP feeling guilty. CLAIM the promises that has been made to us. The promises of forgiveness and grace and mercy. You CAN beat the devil by standing on God's Word and praying daily and actively pursuiing a relationship with the Lord. Let me pray for you now:
Dear Father God,
I come to you on behalf of your child, London girl. Dear Father, I do not know her. To me she is just someone on the computer. But, Father, You do know her. You know everything about her. She has expressed that she needs you, Father. We know that you are the comforter, we know that you are peace. Your Word says, peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you. Oh, Father, please bring London girl peace. She wants to beat your enemy. Oh Father, her heart crys out to you in all its sincerity. Father, I pray that you would just wrap your loving arms around her and as she prays and reads your Word, you would just speak to her Father. In Jesus Precious Name I pray, Amen

I saw some answer that you shouldn't become an atheist, or believe there is no god, just because some feel that way. I pose the opposite to you: You should not believe in a god or be a christian just because some feel that way.
Why do you NEED god? Do you need someone to tell you to be a good person, to help others? Do you need imaginary pats on the head from an absentee sky daddy?
I don't know why you feel lonely and lost, but prayer does not help depression!!!! Let me say that again, PRAYER DOES NOT HELP DEPRESSION! Get professional help, dear, from a certified, medically-trained person in the psychiatric profession.
Personally, I felt 1000% better about my life, the world, and everything around me when I finally admitted I don't believe in god. That was a lot of weight and guilt to carry around with me at all times.

Perhaps you should look into counseling. A good therapist will be able to at the very least give you some ideas about how you can cope with your feelings.
Right now, it sounds like you are suffering from depression. That is a serious matter and should be treated like any other illness, by going to a doctor. In this case a psychologist.

The feeling of loneliness and loss is a very important stage in the spiritual journey. That doesn't make it any easier. God really, truly exists and will help you get through it. Say a simple prayer in your own language in a quiet, private place. Don't make it long or try to force yourself to pray more than you want to. Ask God for direction, for relief from confusion and loneliness and state your desire to live the spiritual life. God will hear you and will respond.

How can I help? You are not alone in this world and you are not the only one feeling lost! We all need God and the strenght to do right! The forgiveness when we make a mistake. Atheists are not truly against God... God is there whether they believe it or not!
Let me just ask... how can I help? My "ears", my time, my understanding goes to you. God is the same... he is there if you cry loud or speak soft, he hears... tell him your troubles in detail and ask for help!

Have you asked God for help? Start there. Read the Bible every day, starting with the New Testament. Find a good church that teaches the bible (I recommend a non-denominational church as they're less likely to have man-made add-on rules that they, not Christ, say are necessary) and hopefully has groups that meet outside of regular church services.

I absolutely agree with Khalid E, and comparing us with the other answerers you can easily discover that the Muslims are very courteous, civil and just. (No offense to others, of course.)
I don't recommend you turn to a Muslim this instant, the desire to do so must come from within and I'm sure you can develop that once you read the Quran.

Atheists do not go against god, they don't believe in God, simple as that.
It sounds like you are doing a lot of searching, and are certainly in need of something in your life, but why does that have to be religion?
You need faith in YOURSELF rather than to try and invent faith in god which you clearly don't have.
Life can be poo and life can be crap, but deluding yourself into thinking you believe in something you really don't won't help you at all.

Don't let people tell you there is no God just because that's what they believe. If you believe there is, then you believe. But if you don't believe it, then you don't. It is pretty simple, but it all comes down to you.
Know however that if you set these lofty standards you'll never meet them. Christians aren't perfect, they aren't even always good people. You don't have to be powerful in order to be religious.
Best wishes.
