Alter = alternative
Ego is referring to personality in this case.
Your alter-ego would be your alternative (or other) personality. If you were nice and respectful and soft spoken at work, but wild and boisterous and extroverted outside of work, then that might be your 'alter ego'. The other examples given by other members are also good ones.
alter ego:
"1. a second self; a perfect substitute or deputy: His adviser acts as his alter ego during his absence.
2. an inseparable friend.
3. another aspect of one's self. "

Alter ego is Latin and means "the other I".
In English language use it can have two meanings:
1, a person whose personality is different from your own but who shows or acts as another side of your personality.
The original personality is the "ego" (the "I"), the second personality is the "alter ego". (You could say it's like two persons in one body.)
classic examples: Spiderman is the alter ego of Peter Parker, Clark Kent is the alter ego of Superman , Mr. Hyde is the alter ego of Dr. Jekyll
2, a close friend who is very like yourself

It comes from Latin and means "The other I" and refers to different fractions of a personality.
Clark Kent - Superman
Daytime Student - Nighttime ......
etc.
It does not refer to a partner, lover etc.
BTW - you must not hate things that you don't understand - it's early enough to hate them when you know what they are really about.

It means "the other you". It can be used in many ways, for example to refer to less known sides of your personality, or if you've been pretending to be two or more different people.
