Yes, I have been in combat and I have put myself in a situation to laydown my life. Luckily I am still here.
As far as my civilian friends, I would say yes as long as the reasoning wasn't something retarded.

As you said many people have in wartime, but in real life things are different. It depends from the circumstances, your job and if you have wife and kids then the all situation is more complicate .
So to answer your question if i was at war or if i was a police officer, fireman etc.certainly yes because in that cases you depend on each other.

The ultimate act of friendship is to give your life for that friend. (John 15:13)
Sitting here comfortably at my laptop, it is easy for me to say 'Yes, I would give up my life so my friend can continue to fulfill his purpose.'
However, at this moment in time, I do not feel, in any way, threatened or that my life is in danger. And, if I am honest, I cannot imagine it either. So to answer your question, I do not know unless I was actually in the position of thinking about giving my life up for a friend.
I would love to think yes though....

I couldn't really say, unless I was in that situation. Possibly, possibly not.
Edit:
Of course, there is also the question would you ask your friend to lay down their life for you, to which the answer is no.

John 15:13Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. 14You are my friends if you do what I command. 15I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.
Yes, i would. i am in the Army now so i would. i would also die for my good brothers in church.
Jesus did it for me. He died for me.

It depends on who, and the circumstances.
I would check all the facts first I think.
Or , if I was visiting with someone, and saw someone trying to hurt a freind, I would try to stop them in most cases I think.

how noble!Truth is much less heroic. They were convinced by propaganda to be pawns for some fight. Do you believe that the kings care how many pawns they lose if they can win the round without them?
