My very first night on the job (I rode with an FTO) I got in a high speed pursuit, responded to an armed robbery call, and made a drug arrest. At the end of my shift that morning I thought that this was the best job in the world. That was over sixteen years ago. A short time later I realized that some nights are better then others. Some shifts you spend your day doing BS. Responding to barking dog calls, the guy who called the police because his girlfriend wouldn't have sex with him (no kidding), the neighborhood fued involving several neighbors calling the police on each other on a daily basis for nothing, etc. Other days you find the little kid that is missing and out in the freezing weather, you get to arrest the gang bangers that are breaking into houses and businesses, you find the mother load of drugs on a traffic stop, etc.
I've had an idiot spit on me, been assaulted, someone tried to run me over, etc. Other times I had a complete stranger anonymously pay for my meal, had people thank me for taking the time to help them or for no reason at all but just patrolling their neighborhood, etc.
This job is not a continuel episode of Cops. There are ups and downs. I was a Pre-Vet major when I decided to change course and go in to Law Enforcement. There are days I wish I had stuck with being a vetrinarian because I understand animals better then people sometimes. But if I could go back in time I wouldn't change a thing. I would still be a Police Officer because, in my humble opinion, it is the best job in the world. The good outweighs the bad and the highs do make up for the lows.

Having spent over 30 years in law enforcement...I believe my actions speak louder than words.
There is NO officer that can go home at night and NOT feel as if he/she has accomplished something productive in making their homes and communities a better place for everybody.
Unlike what some have said here about officers being crooks or "ganging up" on a bad guy, officers will always start a contact with the public with a somewhat increase in caution. Obviously, you can't "judge a book by its cover" and therefore we have no idea who may decide to fight with us just because they don't want to see the end results of their own actions.
What most who say law enforcement are overbearing in their actions don't realize is that the suspect makes the overall decision as to how they are "handled." If you are cooperative and don't run from the police, you will be treated in the same manner as the officer would want to be treated were he/she in the suspects shoes. One can see from all the "cop shows" on television that not all suspects are easy going and cooperative! If a suspect decides they want to resist the actions of the officer....expect the officer to use that force necessary to make an arrest.
Despite my soapbox description here....overall...I'd do it again because of my genuine desire to help those who need help and improve the community where I live.
Law abiding citizens have a right to live their lives free from the thugs who prey upon others because they're to cheap and ignorant to make a real life for themselves without stepping on others toes!

As mostly all the others stated, it different every single day. some days are exciting some are boring, for the most part there is never a dull moment casue once you think you have seen it all, sometihin else will surprise you. If you stay in law enforcement for any amount of time you will realize all this. but at the same time, right when i say that nothin exciting has happened lately, i get in a chase. or if i say its too busy, it will slack off. they counterbalance each other in just about the right amount.

it caused me to spend a tremendous amount of time away from my family.politics liked to have made me quit.i am a 5th generation retired cop.i loved the work.it is nothing like it looks from the outside.you realize very quickly that you spend most of your time writing reports.you also realize that if there is action it will cause a tremendous amount of time on reports.truthfully the job out grew me.things change so much. about the time you get used to things it changes again. laws will change almost yearly.i know i did some good in peoples lives.i made a point of getting to know the people.my dad told me that if i try to take care of the people they will take care of me.the job just grows on you even though it has all the bad stuff.you have a group that consists of cops all across the nation, that care about each other.when i retired that was the hardest part for me. i miss all the closeness of so many

During my career in law enforcement (deputy sheriff in Illinois) I generally felt that I was making a difference. Even up to the time of my retirement, I maintained a very high activity level, and tried to encourage the "less active" (lazy) officers to try to keep up. My biggest problem didn't come from the public, but from the Administration (playing politician) instead of taking care of his men/women under him. If you go into law enforcement, good luck in your career.

Let me sum it up for you... it is 364 days of boredom and 24 hours of sheer terror. i have been a cop for almost 10 years. I had a guy attack me one night and my sergeant ended up shooting him in the head while we were on the ground. He had my gun and was trying to shoot me. So yes there is a lot of little stuff, but you get some scary crap every now and then

El Scott hit it right on the nose. Every day is different, there is no such thing as routine and I wouldn't change it for the world.
