Isn't that a rather crude way of getting rid of undesirables?

Why not just turn all the bad guys into pillars of salt, like he did to Lot's wife for the terrible crime of looking over her shoulder?

Instead, Noah's got to build a dirty great big boat, with only enough room for two of everything, allowing the rest of the animals to get wiped out along with the people.

Wouldn't it have made more sense to just smite the baddies?

Dosn't it make God look somewhat inefficient?

Where did the water come from, and where did it go?

Science tells us the water on the Earth's surface is finite and the volume never changes.

The story of the flood is based on the creation of the Black Sea.
Some thousands of years ago, what is today the Black Sea was a huge fresh water lake, completely isolated from what we call the planetary ocean. During the meltdowns at the end of the last ice age the levels of the Mediteranian Sea were rising rapidily. The thin stretch of land separating the two bodies of water colapsed, thus the lake was floded and became the Black Sea. Since the area was populated by a lot of ancient civilizations they were lots of casualties and also lots of eyewitness accounts. The story of the flood was pased on thru generations since then.
As far as the creation of everything by god, the punishement of the sinners, and all the rest... it's just fairytales.

Gary H says it best:
"Consider religious stories in the same light as you consider storiues of Zeus and the Greek Gods. It was and is man's way of explaining things science has not yet discovered the answer to, or where ignorance is king. "

A flood sends a powerful message though, and works within the rules of the universe. Even though God lays down the law, even he has to follow them or else having faith would mean nothing. The flood also served to allow Noah and his family to have their faith reaffirmed and rewarded, which taught them to raise their children to be closer to God, to have stronger faith. They were separated and isolated on a big boat with nothing to do but care for the animals and talk amongst themselves. Strengthens the bonds of family and faith.
