First , have a yard sale and rid of the items you don't want to take. Use that money to rent a u-haul

Pack things out room by room... the least used room first. double check to make sure noting is left in the room and clean it good and shut the door, before you move on to the next one. If you have old curtains or blinds, leave them.. chances they won't fit the new home windows... you can buy new ones that fit in your new house at a good price.
I've never used a moving company, you can rent a u-haul pretty reasonable and you just take the truck back to the nearest u-haul rental place.
so first is the yard sale.. no need to pack up things you don't want or need..a good rule to follow is if you haven't used it in 6 months , chances are you won't use it again, sell it.

Here's a website about cleaning and organising that has tips for moving. Since I use this site to help me clean my house, I can say, it works!

In case it doesn't mention it... Always label your boxes. Not just a general room type label, but also a detailed packing list. That way if you need to find something, you don't have to open several boxes and go hunting before you finally find what you're looking for.

Have everything packed in boxes, the more boxes, the easier for the movers....

Also the fridge, have it taped or emptied, depending on your house/one you are moving into. We helped the movers, but they took a break during the move in, so we did most of that. We tipped them afterwards, but I was shocked they took a break when they were on our clock.....I didn't want to pay them for taking a lunch break, it was only 10:30.........

We hire moving companies when we move. We also have them pack. They do it by room and label the boxes. I do the unpacking as I like to put things where I want them. It's never easy to move but the movers make it palatable.
