How many different styles of guitar are there to learn?

Question

I'm interested in learning how to play the guitar, but I want to be sure of what I want before I go out and try to find a guitar teacher. What different styles are out there, which would be more desirable to learn, and where would you suggest finding a teacher? Any other helpful tips would be appreciated :)

I have tried to learn by myself in the past, but I found it too hard to keep myself motivated >_>

Depends what sort of music u want play & what u want to do with ur guitar. The easiest is basic "folk" guitar - chords and strumming as an accompaniment for u or others to sing to. This is. the one that is probably the most use. From this u can go further into folk style - fingerpicking etc; into rock/blues/jazz, whatever . Classical is the most difficult. The guitar has to held just so, the left thumb has to be screwed into the back of the guitar neck and the right hand fingers take a pounding. However, if that is the type of music that appeals, it will be worth it.
Steel strung acoustic guitars will serve for most music, but classical/spanish require nylon strings. Nylon strings are also easier on the fdingers for a beginner.
Also be aware , as u no doubt remember from before,that u cannot have long,pretty nails on ur left hand and those fingers are going to hurt for a while. Hope this helps, and happy picking.

Well you have classical that's what I play, and then rock of course, and then you have lead, country, rhythm, finger style, I love this style played on acoustic guitar. Then there's bass. I'm sure that you have a preference, right ? Or is it that you just want to play. I knew from the time I was about eight or nine that classical was my thing, and like I said I also love finger style. Go to any local music store to find a teacher or look in your phone book, or check your local colleges, their music department has a lot of undergraduates who want to earn extra money in the summer by teaching privately. there are plenty of different styles of guitar playing. there's jazz, blues, country, rock, heavy metal and the list goes on. what you need first is to learn the basics of guitar playing. once you have mastered the basics, you can now concentrate on a specific style. you could also listen to some records of guitar players of the style that you would concentrate on to get the feel of the style. for example you could listen to Howlin' Wolf when you go into blues, or Wes Montgomery in jazz.

Well if your teacher doesn't know anything about the type of music you want to learn to play, then I suggest you get a new teacher. I've had a few teachers that weren't totally into the music I liked, but they always wanted to listen to it, and would then show me examples of similar things that they DID know well. If your teacher is just clueless about how to teach you the things you're into though, he's not the right teacher for you.

You should always start by learning the basics before you worry about style. If you don't, it won't matter which style you choose---you'll never play well. Take classical guitar and learn all you can before branching off.
