Customer service is a service the business provides to respond to customers' questions and resolve customers' problems. What it entails depends on the type of company. In many cases, the service is provided by phone. Customers call, you answer the phone, listen to what they have to say, and respond accordingly. If you cannot help them, you turn them over to someone who can, or you get the information you need and get back to them.

In a store customer service may be a counter where customers come with questions, problems, merchandise to be returned, adjustments to their account, payment of their bill, and similar issues.

A business that hires you for this position usually has to train you so that you can respond properly. You have to learn something about how the business operates. Often as you start to work, a supervisor will be right there with you to watch you perform and to help you out until you know how to handle the job properly.

Customer service is responding to the customer in a timely manner and helping them in any way that you can, even if it is not actually part of your job. Let's say that a customer makes a purchase in your store and finds out that her car won't start when she returns to it. You could just say your sorry and shrug your shoulders, or you could offer to call someone for her, or even jump start her car for her. That is going a little above and beyond your "duties, but I can guarantee you will have made a customer for life.
