Actually when your system was delivered you didn't change the settings & by default auto update from Microsoft is enabled & your OS was getting update every time you connected to Internet, and patch by microsoft was available that is why it says an older version on CD. You will have to format the primary partition Usually "C"first & than you can reinstall WinXP.

If you purchased a single XP CD then it should install right over the old one but if you took an XP CD that came with a separate computer then its not going to work.

Why not try to re-install the PCs original OS? Its simple and when done the PC will work just as well as the day you brought it home. Save all of the data you don't wish to lose on a CD or external HD and after you re-install the OS simply put the data back.

No need of uninstalling the xp from ur pc. Just insert the disc and use the option "boot from cd rom". So you can install the xp again.

The problem is due to the older version of xp that is inside the cd, just like it may be xp service pack 1 or older, but ur installed xp may be newer than that just like service pack 2 or newer..

chances are the copy loaded is updated to sp2 and the disc still has sp1. I am assuming this is windows XP? Anyways if you go into your bios and set the computer to boot from the rom will avoid that. It's just your trying to reinstall while windows is loaded and it recognizes what is on the hd and the disc, thus is why it denies you.

the reason for that is you have now installed all the updates, and most prob have service pack 2 installed thats why it is telling you it is an older version
