Expressions like hello, bye-bye, thank you are used all over the world. I even received an email in Hebrew ending "Bibi" in Hebrew script.

Well, alot of Japanese like to practice their English speaking skills. So, naturally, if you ever visit Japan, you will find that trying to practice your Japanese will be harder because the Japanese people would like you to speak English so they can practice the language. But Japan, including many other foreign contries, picks up bits and pieces of the English language and fits it into theirs. So it is not unusual for a Japanese figure to say english words in their Japanese speech.

Thank you, like the greeting hello, is a very well known expression. I don't know about your anime character but many native Japanese speakers will use hello, bye-bye and thank you when speaking to English speakers just to be a bit more personal.
If you were visiting Japan, you would probably find yourself saying domo arrigato without thinking about it to Japanese hosts.

culture. in japan everything from europe is considered expensive, of good quality, and well cultured, especially items from france (think not only fashion but also furnature .e.g.)
Western decorated houses are mainly for the rich and well of japanese, and you need to be rich to walk around in dior aswell. Incorporating english into the language to some extent make you more refined. in japanese eyes.
p.s. there are many more words that the japanese adopted, from european origin. a few examples.
Interaneta. (internet)
Doraiba (driver (in golf))
Biiru (beer, although this was adopted from the dutch bier, which sounds the same)
Otemba (ontembaar, also dutch)
Gai (gay)
Boi (boy)
viirusu (Virus, from german)
Ineruki (Energy, also german)
Omuletu (from omelet, french)
Amataa (amature, from french/english)
