I usually go to the gym in the evenings but recently have started going early int he morning before work.

Just wondered if the time of day makes any difference when working out? If so, what is the difference?

You will hear a load of daft theories on this one, but basically it is down to your own body's circadian rythms.

A lot of people say the morning is the best time, and it is for most people, as your body will constantly burn off calories for the rest of the day. But this doesn't suit everyone.

Everyone has a different natural rythm, ie. Morning people, night people, etc. So it is down to when you feel most comfortable training and most refreshed afterwards.

My own personal best time for example is early to mid afternoon, but it does no harm to go a little earlier or later every now and then.

Just try and find what is best for you

I like the 1st posters response about doing what's right for YOU. Yes, I've always heard mornings are best, but... what do you do when you tend to get up later like I do? So for a while in the summers when I can sleep in (like now), I *try* to do it as soon as I get up or sometime in the afternoon when I get the urge. Most of the time though, like when I'm working more, I end up doing it in the evening or weekend, & sometimes late at night (usually just yoga/pilates & such then). It tends to make me sleep better (as long as it's not too late), plus i usually feel better & more energized the next day.

The other problem I have with doing a hard workout in the morning (or whenever I get up) is that I don't eat a lot, & would rather wait til later in the day when I've had at least a real meal & not just fruit or yogurt. I've heard to really make yourself do it when you feel tired, but... I'm really bad about doing this. Funny how I can give advice about this & not even be able to do it myself on a consistent basis ;-)

Its a huge debate and everyone has a different opinion.

It really depends on what your goals are: if you want to lose weight then the morning would be great, before you take in any calories in food your body will go into fat burning mode quicker and you will lose more fat and tone up.

If you want to add muscle mass then the evenings will be better. You will already be loaded with the protein and calories you need for a effective workout and your muscles will be less likely to pull or injure.

this is just an opinion but I think its pretty accurate.

Good luck!

The experts say that it is the best time for YOU, personally. The time you are most likely to DO IT. Everyone is different. For me, I must wake up and immediately go do it. (Well, maybe after my coffee). Or it may never get done. Also, its not BEST (but it won't kill ya) to workout within 2 hours of a nights rest. Peace

I like to work out in the morning too. Seems to be the best time.

They say that you actually build muscle when you're sitting watching tv, not working out at the gym. So, as long as you're just sitting around for a few hours after working out, you should be good.

Really it's what's best for you, I can't work out for toffee in the morning.

I read a study that suggested peak athletic performance was achieved in late afternoon/early evening time.

It really just matters that you can consistently work out a set time.
I personally work out in the mornings.

It really doesn't matter, just as long as you make the time to work out. But mornings are ideal in order to avoid procrastination.

later... as in... " I'll do it later" hehee just kidding. Usuallly the best time to work out is in the morning. It gives your metabolism a kick start which helps to help you lose weight and it also helps with your circulation.
