if the kitten isn't weened yet you can use a saucer of milk and use your finger to teach it to lap the milk just put your finger in the milk to get it wet then put it to the kittens mouth. then take your finger away towards the milk so it will drink it on its own. if it is weened you can feed it wet or dry food for kittens. need some toys, food and water dish, hold it and pet it. they are very playful at such a young age and as they get older. a toy on a string some balls with bells in them. oh cat litter and box. it being so young you will want to give it alot of attention by holding it or even playing with it. you can even teach it to play fetch, tag, and to jump for the toy. keep in mind any and everything can be a toy to them. my 1 year old kitty plays with a yo-yo she'll bring it to you by the string so i can roll it on the floor so she can bring it back. you will need some cat clippers to keep the claws down. you can use nail clippers to but i've found the cat clippers work best. the claws don't split as bad. just when doing it try to trim them about 1/8" from the pink so you don't draw blood and hurt the paws. oh when trying to litter train it if its a female (i've heard is the easiest to train) when you see her hunting a place to 'relieve' herself pick her up and place her in the litter box and let her do her business. it works with males to. good luck.

Your kitten needs to be held and stoked. Needs some toys and ones that you can interact with. The kitten needs to be talked to especially when fed. Ask the kitten, "are you hungry"? The kitten will respond vocally.
Bring the kitten to where you watch TV and include him/her in that. Also bring him/her to bed with you. Try to use a brush on it so it won't get hairballs. I do not believe in de-clawing, so I suggest you buy and use a nail clipper. If you use this from the start, the cat will be used to it and not be afraid of this.
You already know about the litter box. It can be simple or automated. Some cats can be trained to use the toilet, although I have never done that, but have heard of successful endeavors. I use an automatic litter box, but that is your choice.

You will need:
1. Litter box
2. Kitty litter (clumping kind is best)
3. Food bowl (for dry or wet food)
4. Water bowl
If the kitten is over 2 months old it can start eating kitten food. If the kitten is younger than 2 months it may not yet be weaned and still need some formula or something (check with your local pet store)
Also be sure to take the kitten in for a complete check up with your local vet ASAP.

you don't say how old the kitten is so if it's less than 6 weeks (it hasn't been weened from the mother)you'll need a bottle and formula available in most pet stores. a litter box, litter,if older than 6 weeks food like kitten chow moisten it with water or milk, food and water bowls and take it to the vet for an exam, shots and birth control.oh and if you can keep your kitty indoors(indoor cats can live 20 years or more where as outdoor cats average 3-4 years with luck) Enjoy your new family member.

Did anyone mention a scratching post as a necessary item? Without a place for kitty to scratch, your door frame, furniture and who knows what else will become the substitute. Get this item immediately and make sure that your little friend knows where it is and what it's for. You can put their little paws on the surface and drag them across it a couple of times and they'll usually get the idea.

all of the essentials, kitten food, maybe fresh chicken/tuna, lots of love and attention will bring out their good nature. litter tray etc. The all important checks / vaccinations, may want to consider pet insurance? oh and it's own towel when it comes in from the rain. grooming brush- if it's a long haired cat. Also check out the kittens sex, if its female and you don't want any unwanted kittens, talk to the vet.

That is great...taking care of kitten is fun.
You need to get their food like in a tin cans and water bowl.
A small ball or any other toy would be nice for the kitten to play with when you are not around.
Most importantly is cat litter if its not toilet train.
Take care!!
