Their not, they just think they are!
BTW, being smart won't save you.
Religion does not teach you not to question things, whoever said that is misled.
The world is being deceived by the Satan and he will use any means possible. He comes to steal, kill and destroy your life.
Do you realize that Satan himself thought he was smart enough to out smart his creator.

I noticed a couple of things on that site:
1. The author of the article is an unknown person. They've never had anything published. I'm supposed to just take their word for it?
2. They don't quote sources for their article. It would have been nice if links had been posted to the articles that he used.
3. I happen to KNOW where some of those other articles appeared, and guess what? They're MISLEADING. Go figure.
As a sidenote, why do some people think that scientists are the final authority on spiritual matters? Would these same people trust a biochemist to perform brain surgery? Scientists specialize in the PHYSICAL realm, NOT spiritual. I won't take anyone else's word on matters that are spiritual, not even theology majors. I'd rather find out for myself.
There IS no link between IQ and religiosity. Some are smarter than others, on both sides of the equation.

This answer is for Pamela . You are wrong science has never proved we used 10 percent of our brain capacity. on the contrary science has actually disproved it.
Now answering the question There are two very well educated gentlemen one of them is Richard Dawkins The other is Francis Collins Well well There was a debate November last year between these two people. Richard Dawkins is an atheist. Dr Francis Collins is a religious person. After the debate one could get to the conclusion that is not that atheist are smarter than religious people. It is religion indoctrination that makes smart people become dumb.

As a researcher, I would have to say it depends on what you consider "intelligence." I personally think being open-minded is a key part of intelligence, so it is expected that those that come to their own conclusions about spirituality would be smarter. But they do not need to be Athiests.
By IQ, SATs and GREs I am definitely considered smart and hold an MA (earning a PhD). I DO believe in God, but was never taught to. My other beliefs include: evolution, heaven but no Hell, no Devil, no free will, multiple lives, and the Bible would a) not be the work of God, because he would never tell us what he wants so directly and b) be tainted by mistranslation and political agendas, things taken but not meant literally, etc.
The "less intelligent" "religious" people you speak of are the people who don't really believe anything. They are just going through the motions because they don't think for themselves or are afraid of what might happen if they don't (Hell).
I think it is important that everyone take the time to think about what they really believe in, not just accept it. But in relation to this, what makes you think that people who are in science are so smart? Science is really not all that different from religion. Believing in it without question is as dangerous as believing in religion without question. For example, IQ is far from a perfect measure (I happen to be an Experimental Psychologist). And relationships are rarely as clear as they seem. Though with so many convergent finding achieved through different measures, there is SOME reason why this is happening, it just might not be what we think is happening.
I think spirituality should be intuitive, not something you are TOLD to believe.

I consider myself a Christian and can think through the facts qute well. In fact, the more I have learned, the stronger my faith in God becomes. I'm a graduate of college and I had a high IQ. So, you're data isn't true of all Christians.
All this data does is contribute to stereotyping that is already going on from people who post here. Just because someone believes in God doesn't mean that they're uneducated.
Also, just so you know, I was an atheist for 18 years when I DIDN'T question the facts that I was told. When I started questioning things, I found the truth in life. No church influenced the searching that I did. I was free to look at whatever I wanted and believe whatever I wanted. When I looked through everything, I made the decision myself.

They're not!
An Atheist's logic is very similar to the "logic" that once stated that the earth was flat, it will eventually fall through, then they will have to completely reform their way of thinking.
You only consider Atheists to be smarter because they hold your particular views.
If you have already assured yourself that YOUR views and beliefs are correct, naturally you will consider anything that conflicts with those views as "incorrect", thus being less intelligent. Similarities in oppinion surly don't define, nor do they constitute being "smart". Being such a "smart" Atheist, you should know this.

well, the survey says it all. 72% of scientists are atheists. and scientists are usually smart, right? on the other hand...i think these surveys were only done in america. America's not the world, people. and they only surveyed 500+ scientists. that's got to be less than a thousand or else they would've said 1000+. i don't think that's enough evidence to generalize the idea. i mean there are billions of people out there. and it's only according to the National Academy of Scientists...not the INTERNATIONAL Academy of Scientists, if ever there was one. and not all smart people are scientists.

Science has proven we use less than 10% of our brains. Based on that fact how "logical" do you think we can really be? Even things that seem logical to us can indeed be very wrong. "Facts" can be very misleading. That is the very reason that God places within each of us a measure of FAITH. We don't "know it all" as we like to think we do but God does. Based on those facts does it make more sense to trust in Him or to belive in Atheist "logic" which at best was arrived at by using less that 10% of his brain? Based on the world's definition of "smart" I suppose many Atheists could be looked upon as smarter than Christians. But I also know an Engineer who lost all his fingers by picking up his push mower to cut his shrubs. Intelligent? Yes! Common sense? Not a lick. I don't care what label the world chooses to place on me. I am a born-again child of God & I will make it to Heaven one day where I will witness every single "intelligent" Atheist bowing & proclaiming Jesus Christ to be the King of Kings & Lord of Lords just before they are thrown into Hell. By the way, on that day it won't matter how high their incomes were or how good their credit was.
EDIT: YOUR QUOTE IN ADDITIONAL DETAILS:
"Irony: All the religous answers seemed to have been misspelled. hmmmm.."
Ironic indeed. You misspelled religious. Hope I'm not offending your superior "intelligence" by pointing it out.

Atheist are smarter than religious people? Where do you get those fact. You obviously make an assumption without fact. If I am not mistaken Bill Gates, Donald Trump and majority of world leaders are not an atheist. It is obvious that religious people are smarter.

It's because atheist know how to apply the 10 year old kid test to evaluating information and because they do know how to apply that test ,that makes them seem smarter.
The 10 year old kid test is simple: If ask a ten year old kid who broke the lamp in the living room , the more convoluted his answer is the less likely it is to be true. " I did " therefore is a true answer

well, why is it that atheists/theists-that-don't-really-believe-in-God-and-practice-fully-what-is-taught suffer more from stress? all i see is that those who REALLY believe in God (meaning does all His commands) have almost no fears (fear of not having enough money, death, sickness, pain, being weak, being stupid, having low self esteem, alienated, etc...) and have better self control compared to the atheists (keep in mind that this is for the real devout and obedient Christians who does all that Jesus taught) thus free from their natural yet self-destructive instincts (sexual instincts which may lead to fights and depression, anger and self-defense which may lead to destruction and war, arrogance and pride which attracts hatred and petty mindedness, etc.)
atheists should use that so called higher IQ to choose which one is the best to live with...
