I have been in admin for 5 years. I hate it. It is the only thing I know, though. I hate being at a desk all day. I go bonkers sitting still. I cant even sit through a movie. The only other skill I have is writing which doesn't pay well until you are established which could take years. I do not have a college degree but am desperate to get out of admin. I am between jobs now and cringe at the thought of going back and sitting at a desk for 8 hours. No offense to those who love office work. I wish I could be more like that but I'm not. What other careers could I pursue that are not office but pay decent?

The trades are begging for young workers, electrician, plumber, pipe fitter, shipwrights, welders, machinist. They don't pay as well as being admin but darn close and much better than office staff. A welder makes about twice what a receptionist makes but the work isn't as steady so they won't make as much as a lower level admin position. Ship sups also make an excellent living some can make more than corporate officers and they spend most of the day on ships or docks not at their desk. Also look at Estimating and in our company the safety and environmentalists is out all day keeping people safe and dealing with problems.

Have you considered sales? Real Estate? Mortgage? Stocks? You may have to be in an office but you will be a lot more active. I'm not in sales so I only speak from assumption, but there is a lot more hustle involved with a potentially big payoff in sales. This is only if you are ambitious and want the business. I have friends that make a killing in the mortgage business and they work HARD. They wouldn't last a minute in a cubicle. I hope this helps a little.
