Have you ever heard the phrase "Nobody will love you more than me"? These unfortunate women have been so brainwashed by their abuser(s) that they actually start believing that phrase is true. Or maybe that was what they heard throughout their life.
A lot of professionals think that women go back to the abuser because they may never have known any other way of life. Perhaps even being abused by her own family members as she was growing up. That would be one scenario.
Another scenario could be about a maternal instinct. She may think she can help him overcome his abuse of her.
And, of course, we have all heard the question "Why do you stay with him?" and the answer is always the same "Because I love him".
Sure, they may have started out by loving him. However, an abuser can manipulate her into thinking that she would be worthless. They have low self-esteem or self-worth. So, she goes back to her abuser because she feels that having someone is better than having no one. When she comes across a good and decent man who respects and loves her, she is scared, because she only knows 'love' from her abuser.
I am not sure if this answers your question. I am not sure there will ever be just one answer.

it's a cycle.
1. it starts off by the man isolating the woman from friends and family, plus the brainwashing that "no one will love you like i love you"
2. then it starts of with putting down the woman and destroying her self-esteem through little things
3. then when she is subservient, the man starts treating her like property - beating her up, verbally (sometimes sexually) abusing her.
4. then there is the honeymoon phase where he tries to woo her back with flowers, jewellry, promises like "i won't do that again, i promise... it's only because you did this...blah blah blah" and he does his best to win her back
repeat cycle from step 1.
it is difficult to get out of this trap. it takes a good support system and a place to run to. also, the decision to leave him for good (not for now) has to come from the woman, and she has to stick with it, no matter what he does, says or gives her.

its a cycle that needs to be broken but they are to afraid NOT to go back..sometimes they are threatened and made to go back in fear of thier lives. it is sad and needs to be dealt with but in the right way..i wish i new what way that would be..you can i guess look up a support group for this type of thing for women in her situation and im sure they would love to help you get someone out of that situation ...im guessing your going thru this already...so try that...they should be able to guide you on how to help her. good luck.
